Thanks.
I can give a few general points, but I am the Spaniards here can provide more detail. :) :)

-It would be wrong to say war was rich verse poor in all circumstances. Republican ranks included the emerging middle class and Nationalists ranks contained many peasant farmers.

-The main point of conflict seeemd to be absolute and conflicting world views (Left verse right Wing).
A. The activists on both side were commited to no compromise. Many Spaniards were in the middle and forced to choose a side.
B. A large part of the early violence was based on personal vengeance with political excuses.

-The provinces where unjust tenant farmer arrangements or Industrial exploitation tended to go Republican.
- Andalucia ( Republican, Almost all farmers were tenant farmers)
- Asturias (Republican Coal miners very poor conditions)
- Catalonia (Republican Seperatist lots of leftist political influence)
- Navarre (Most farmers owned their own farms, Nationalist)
- Galicia (Franco's home region, Nationalist)
- Basque area (Mixed, Seperatist advocates supported Republicans, but region was very religously conservative thus Nationalist influence)
G. Estramedura (Rapid advance by Nationalists perhaps indicates strong Nationalsit sympathies.)

Then there is the Church influence
- Almost all clegy nominally supported Nationalists
- Clergy was tax payer supported and some (many?) were corrupt
-Church also represented Spanish Culture and National identity.
-Despite Republican propaganda, few if any monks or priests were armed supportes of Nationalists.
-Atrocities against Church as a religous / cultural institution (not just against certain exploitive members) by radical anarchists alienatated many potential Republican supporters.

Hope this helps,

John

The causes were mainly the same that in the WW2. I mean, a fascist band against a communist band.

During the period 1931-1936, Spain was a democratic Republic, but like in all Europe, the "left" and "right" political parties were radicalizing more and more...
In 1936, a coalition of "left" parties won the elections. This coalition, called the "Popular Front" was formed by, among others, the communist party, and some anarchist organization. So, the "right" wing of the political life, didnt see with conformity this victory.

On the other hand, the fascist party "Falange", the "right" party CEDA, and some generals of the Army (General Sanjurjo, General Franco...), made another coalition of fascist influences called the "National Movement". This coalition feared that the Popular Front government could establish a real communist state. So, they decide to make a "Blow of State" to remove this communist coalition of the government.

In their plans, it should only be a rebellion of some days that put General Sanjurjo in the power, but the country was strongly divided and began the war, on 18th July 1936.

During the war, both sides became more radicals: Franco, the new leader of the "Nationals", turn to the right, and his ideals were more fascist than ever. He call for help to his allies, Hitler and Mussolini.

Meanwhile, the "Republicans" or communist, they were more and more close to the european communist. They call for help to the Soviet Union, who helped the Republican side.

European democracies, France and Britain, didnt help the Republican side because of their fear to the possible beginning of the World War in Spain. You shoud see that the Spanish War was a rehearsal of the World War... In Spain were fighting the same "sides" that fought in the WW2, Hitler, Mussolini and Franco, against Soviet Union, and democracy. If France or Britain were helped the Republican side, Hitler would probably declared War to both countries... so, they didnt helped the democratic side.

In the last months of the war, in the last Republican Side (Catalonia, Valencia Region, and Madrid), Republicans were divided among communist, anarchist, non-communist, and many other ideals, so, they had strugglins among them... that beneffit to Franco.

Valencia region (were I live) was probably the spanish region that suffered hardly the blockade of the Franco troops. The spanish republican government was transferred from Madrid, to Valencia. And in the last months, the capital was moved once again. This time from Valencia, to Elda, a little city (my city) that is hidden in a valley that is open to the Alicante Port, were the prime minister Juan Negrin and his government could leave to exile when the war was over.

So, this region, suffered more than each other the blockade, because we were under republican power until the last day of the war, and this zone hadnt food, medicines, potable water... nothing. Many of the children leave in big ships to the Soviet Union, who bring this children to Odessa, in Ukraine. Kids who probably would were dead of hungry here.
