Španski borci - Spanish fighters

#1

Post by K.Kocjancic » 06 Apr 2004, 11:08

Slovenian volunteers are known as "Španski borci". There were 536 Slovenes, fighting against Franco's forces (100 came from Yugoslavia, 266 from foreign countries and for 168 with no records (but mostly from Yugoslavia/Slovenia)). Jungest volunteer had 16 and oldest 50 years.

231 volunteers died in Spain, 49 died during WWII in Yugoslavia, 4 died in Allied armies. 157 died also in that time, after WWII another 61, when on 30.9.1982 there were 32 Spanish fighters still living in Slovenia.

They served in:
- Btl. "Djuro Djaković",
- Btl. "Georgi Dimitrov",
- Btl. "Čapajev"
- 129. Brigade,
- Art. unit "Karl Liebknecht",
- Art. unit "Vasil Kolarov",
- Art. unit "Stjepan Radić",
- Art. unit "Petko Miletić",
- Brigade "Garibaldi",
- II. (Slovene) Kmp. "Ivan Cankar"/Btl. "Djuro Djaković",
- Kmp. "Matija Gubec"/Btl. "Georgi Dimitrov"
- Soviet submarine C-6,
- Tank-Btl. "BT",
- air force,...

7 of Spanish fighters were decorated with order "Narodni heroj"/"National Hero" during WWII.

A list of volunteers will be posted soon...

Regards,
Klemen

He is relative (2nd cousin, 3 times removed). He survived Spanish civil and second world war (fighting as Partisan).
I didn't know, that in my family is a great number of real hard-core communists - now thanks to my family tree project I know more of them.

I used:
1.) Naši Španci. Založba Borec; Lj., 1978
2.) Slovenci, španski borci. ČZDO Komunist, LJ., 1982

I have the book Bili smo v Španiji - Spomini slovenskih prostovoljcev. Ljubljana 1958 and there's a list of 289 volunteers at the back of the book.
For Ciril Rome is written: from Dobrunje, works in Vevče near Ljubljana at the moment.

I'll compare both your list and the list from the book when I'll have some more time.

You'll find different numbers in every other book. Somebody should make a better list - maybe you? Idea for raziskovalna naloga.

Does anyone have a copy of these books in England? Preferably London? Or access to a photocopier.....

or Spanija 1936-39 (Ed by Cedo Kapor)

I would be eternally grateful! :D

Hi Kocjo -

Here's an interesting story regarding the Slovenian volunteers:

At one time, the commander of the Slovenian company in the International Brigades was a Serbian communist named Emil Drenkowski (or Drenowski). Born in Serbia in 1901, Drenkowski joined the Young Communist League when he was in his teens and the Yugoslav Communist Party in 1922. He was a school teacher by profession and was once fired for insulting the king and distributing Communist literature. He was called up for military service in the Yugoslav army and was appointed to a reserve officer course owing to his education, but was demoted to the rank of private for "lack of discipline." He continued to work as a communist while in the army.

Following his military service, Drenkowski returned to teaching and worked to build the communist party in the Serbian countryside. In 1935, after the Yugoslav government uncovered his party cell, he went underground and turned up in Moscow, where he studied and received a positive reference.

In late 1936, Drenkowski was sent to Spain to serve in the International Brigades. He assumed command of the Slovenian Company and led it in several battles until he was wounded and lost his right arm.

Drenkowski returned to the Soviet Union in May 1937. Soon after, the NKVD accused him of being a "right deviationist." He was arrested and shot.

Another case of communism in action....

Books on that topic in London... hmm, well, you could try the SSEES library. Getting a card for that library can be a pain, but they have a fairly good selection of materials. For more info on the library, try this link:

http://www.ssees.ac.uk/libarch.htm

Failing that, there isn't any chance that the Embassy would be of any help is there?

Helen, if you would really like this book it's no problem to send it to UK - it would take just about a week. But this books are only avilable in slovenian language and well, a bit biased.

Best regards,
Polona

Thanks, I'm actually studying at SSEES. I've checked the SSEES, UCL, ULL, LSE and British Libraries and have had no joy so was wondering if any individuals had copies I could use.
Never mind, I've got far too much information to fit into the number of words anyway!

Thanks for all the offers! I've actually managed to find Spanija 1936-1939 in London (LSE library if anyone is interested). As I've only got two weeks before my handin deadline, I will have to make do with that.
Thanks once again,
HelenW
