What kind of flag was the republicans official flag?

George Orwell says in his book "Homage to Catalonia" (1938) that there were red flags all over the Barcelona. That was when Orwell arrived Spain in 1936.

Red flags are almost always communist flags, perhaps that's what Orwell referred to, since the communist were allies with the republicans.

Could be the Communist flag, but more probably is the anarquist falg (Which is black & red), as Barcelona was the base of the anarquist movement. If only you give more details!

Surely that Orwell talks about to the Communist, red flags with the
hammer and the sickle, since the anarchists are red and black. On the
other hand, to say that the colors of the republican flag, are red and
yellow the traditional ones and the dwelled one to him by the
