Battle of Brunete

Post by asiaticus » 04 Aug 2004, 20:02

Does any one know the Nationalist units and commanders involved in the battle of Brunete? Particularly the commanders of the positions at the begining of the battle at Quijorna, Villanueva de la Canada, Los Llanos, Villanueva del Pardillo and Villafranca del Castillo?

I do know that several Banderos of the Spanish Foreign Legion were involved in that battle and that they were the best troops available on the Nationalist side at the time.

Here's a link to an interesting book on the subject that I read recently:

Thanks I have seen both of those and have been asking at iespana forum about this. Great site. They have a lot about the Republican part of the battle. Its the Nationalists I need some more detail about.

Here is what I have so far that may or may not be correct:

I understand that the Brunete sector was held by the III Regiment. 71st Divison. with the following Battalions attached:
2nd Falangist Volunteers Sevilla
8th Infantry Battalion / 25th Rgt.
5th Falangist Volunteers Sevilla

or perhaps they were now attached to 11th Division (some confusion here):
3ª Brigada(teniente coronel de Infantería Abelardo Mancebo Luque)
1 ° Tabor del GFRI Alhucemas n° 5
30 Batallón Expedicionario de Canarias
4° Batallón del Regimiento Granada n° 6
8° Batallón del Regimiento San Quintín n° 25
2ª Bandera de FET de Sevilla (comandante de Caballería Julio Redondo Sepúlveda)
5ª Bandera de FET de Sevilla (comandante de Infantería Víctor Bejarano Delgado)

I have been given a list of the some of the involved units for the battle particularly the ones garrisoning the towns in the path of the offensive. I will list them here.
Los Llanos: (a Morrocan Company, Tabor unknown, 1 ° Tabor del GFRI Alhucemas n° 5 ? )
Quijorna: 5th Falangist Volunteers Sevilla (less 2 centurias), 1 Battery 3 7.5mm AT guns
Villanueva de la Cañada: 2nd Falange Bandera Sevilla, 2 x 10.5mm arty. Guns, 2 Batteries x 3 7.5mm AT guns
Villafranca Castle: 1 Falange centuria, 5th Falangist Volunteers Sevilla
Villafranca del Castillo: 1 Company, 5th Falangist Volunteers Sevilla, 1 Battery x 3 7.5mm AT guns
Villanueva del Pardillo: 8th Bat. / 25th Rgt.San Quintin, 2 Batteries x 3 7.5mm AT guns
Brunete: HQ and HQ troops, 2 Batteries AT guns (+/- 250 men)
and Lieutenant Colonel Mancebo I presume.

REINFORCEMENTS

6 July.
Reinforcements for 71st Infantry Division from 13th Division, Central Army reserve:
Tiradores de Ifni and 5 AT guns , 9th Cazadors Infantry Battalion , 1 battery 15.5mm to Quijorna

Reinforcements for 71st Infantry Division from 14th Divison? or 13th Division, Central Army reserve:?, or?: ( not sure if this is right at all)
5º Tabor Regulares de Larache to Villafranca del Castillo.

7 July

12th Infantry Division or Guadarrama Provisional Division, organiased to hold the Nationalist right flank and try to attack the Republican left flank. The units are commited separately during the next days from 7 to 11. It also took over command of the garrisons of Villafranca Castle, Villafranca del Castillo and Villanueva del Pardillo. I think he also received units from Yaque's 14th Division after they repulsed the II Corps attack near Getafe.

13rd Infantry Division: Operated from the south to block the advance of the 11th Republican Division toward Navalcarnaro, to support Quijorna. and hold the front south of Brunete beween the Guadarama and the Perales Rivers My source put in the OOB the units involved in the early part of the battle. The whole of Division was reffiting at the begining of the battle. I am not sure when these were committed though I know some must have been sent in in day 6 or 7.

I believe they also recived the 4th Navarrese Brigade (under Colonel Camilo Alonso Vega) around the 10th of July.

- 4º Batallón de San Quintín nº 25
- 3º Batallón de Bailén nº 24
4 batteries
1 Engineer company
1 Engineer section

150th Divison moved into the 71st Division area west of the Perales river. I think the 4th Bandera of the Legion was sent there too from the 13th Division.
I have no idea what the battalions or leaders were in this unit:

108th Division elements moved in behind the Guadarama Provisional Division July 10-11th to establish a second line.
I have no idea what the battalions or leaders were in this unit:

11th Infantry Division held the area east of Villanueva del Pardillo over toward Northern Madrid. My source says they were involved in the second phase of the battle (Nationalist counterattack). I know they also had to defend against a late offensive by the Republic by 49th Mixed Brigade taken from II Army Corps.

11th Infantry Division, Bgd Gen. Bartomeu
1st. Nationalist Brigade, Lt. Col. Gonzalez Rojas
"A" Cazadores of Melilla 3 Light Infantry Battalion
"B" Cazadores of Serallo 8 Light Infantry Battalion

1st Falange Bandera, Captain Bravo
3rd Falange Bandera, Captain Morey
Artillery Group 75mm
Artillery Group 105mm
Anti-tank Group 37mm

By the time of the Nationalist counter offensive they seem to have had 44 batteries of artillery.

If anyone has better info or anything to add please post here.

Thanks for that referance, have not seen that before.

I assume that it has a Spanish title? What would that be so I can search the used books for it.

------------
Las gracias por ese referance, no han considerado eso antes. ¿Asumo que tiene un título español? Qué que sea así que puedo buscarlo los libros usados para.
