Battalion Especial

In the battle of Brunete there was a Battalion Especial that covered the night advance of Listers 11th Division to the outskirts of Brunete.

I have been told that this was a Battalion armed at least mostly if not completely with Submachineguns. Is this correct?

Does anyone know how this unit was armed and organized?
