Day 12 of October is the day of the celebration of Spanish Nation. During the military parade of this year the Defense Minister has decided that the offering to the fallen is made by two Spanish veterans who fought during World War II.

One of them fought of the side allied in the Division Leclerc and the other veteran fought next to the axis in the Blue Division.

The controversy is around the veteran of the Blue Division and caused by some members of the political left (heirs of a freedomStalin type?? )

He is right to recognize that other members of the left they are in agreement with the participation of the veteran of the Blue Division.

The situation you describe is very much like what happened in the United States cival war. Each section had much hatred for the agenda of the other side. It has taken two generations for that feeling to go away amongst the general population. it was the Veterans and their societies or fraternities if you like that bound each other through the shared experiance that gradually healed the wounds. After the battle of gettysburg veterans of both sides carried on reunions every 25 years for 75 years until the last one passed away. In these reunions the veterans stopped being antagonists and generally became historians for a bygone era. The same would appear to be possible with your WW2 veterans proud of their acheivements but divided in ideology. To a child in Spain today the men are simply grandpa and they lived through something that made them better than they would have been. I assume society in Spain is also the better for it.

A step on the right direction. Wounds heal this and no other way. Forgive but not forget.
