Project Kingfisher was a military plan to rescue allied POW's in Sandakan POW camp on the east coast of North Borneo in early 1945. For a number of reasons, the project never became a military operation and was scrapped. A ground assault by sea was then approved in July 1945 but cancelled at the last minute as it was discovered the POW's were either not there anymore or all dead.
