US Army Improvised Amphibious River Assault Operations - Mindanao, Philippines 1945

Post by Richard Stone » 27 Feb 2024 04:26

The attached lengthy article discusses a series of amphibious river assaults and operations the US Army made in the Mindanao area of the Philippines during 1945.

The landing operations were made using several types of US Navy landing craft operated by US Navy crews. Fire support was provided by US Navy subchasers and by converting several LCM landing craft into improvised gunboats by arming them with a variety of automatic weapons, including captured Japanese 20mm and 25mm AAA guns. The gunboats are discussed on Page 24 (attachment #10) and the article contains several small photos of them in action.

The article is a summary of a post war US Army report. This version of it was printed in the September 1951 edition of the USA professional military reference magazine ‘Military Review’.

Interesting material; the Mindanao Campaign is often overlooked because of the focus on Leyte and Luzon, but given the scale of the operation, it demonstrates - yet again - how impressive the ability of the US Army and US Navy to mount this sort of campaign, successfully, on short notice.
