Wait, I am confused, why did the Germans train the Chinese when the Japanese were on their side.

The Germans actually tried to broker a truce between the Chinese and the Japanese. They would much rather have Japan and China focused on Russia, for one thing.

When that didn't work and they had to choose a side, they chose Japan and the German advisors were withdrawn.

From about the 1880's Germany had positioned itself as a diplomatic friend of China. Japan was aligned with Britain and America and allied with them in 1914-18.

The 1930's became a little confused with Germany trying to 'play both ends against the middle'. It wasn't till 1936 Germany became formally aligned with a Treaty of Friendship with Japan and fully allied with the Tripartite Pact of 1940.

I lived for two years at Aitape. I was there after the 1998 tsunami and worked on the rehabilitation program. The prison cell where he was held is still there on the bluff looking over the town, it was built during German colonial times. Locals remember the killing and showed me where it happened. I believe he was captured in Lumi District which is in the Torreceli Mountains.

Pearl Harbor Women Firefighter Photo Mystery Solved
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/1 ... 47009.html
A photo of female firefighters believed to have been taken during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has been shown to have been mislabeled.

In his effort to learn more about its origins, MSNBC investigative reporter Bill Dedman found that the photo, which was supposed to have been taken on Dec. 7, 1941, was actually shot during a training exercise....

Today, in 1945, Operation Meetinghouse commenced, likely the most deadly bombing raid of the entire war. An estimated 100,000 to 125,000 people in Tokyo were incinerated, asphyxiated or blown to pieces by a low level bombing mission using napalm and conventional munitions. 25% of Tokyo destroyed. Studies for the effects of the resulting firestorms were conducted based on the model of the deadliest fire in U.S. history, the Peshtigo Fire which, ironically, no one has heard of, yet everyone has heard of the Great Chicago Fire which occurred on the very same day.

Every time I see this photo, and have seen it many/many times in the past, it really upsets me.
