Allied bombing missions on Borneo 1944-1945

#1

Post by hoot72 » 19 Aug 2018, 14:08

Hi

Would anyone know where I could possibly find records or information on allied bombing missions by USAAF and Australian Air Force bombers for the years 1944 and 1945 by any chance and the load/types of aircraft/number of aircraft involved in the missions?

Many thanks!

You can surf through the Pacific Wrecks website on Borneo here:
https://www.pacificwrecks.com/provinces/borneo.html
However, they only have dates and Type of A/C, less so on which unit...
But, it is a place to start.

You can also surf the internet looking for Bomb Group/Bomb Squadron websites such as this for the 307th Bomb Group (Heavy):
http://www.307bg.net/

They mostly have a mission page...Again from the 307th(H):
http://www.307bg.net/history/missions.asp
Lots of nice PDFs to enjoy, however, all you have to go by are mission dates not targets...So, you might want to look through the monthly reports to get an idea of what went where, and go from there.

For example, the October 3rd, 1944, mission bombed Balikapapan:
http://www.307bg.net/data/missionreport ... -370bs.pdf
5 B-24s(1 aborted well short of target) with 10*250 lb. bombs with .1 second delay nose fuses and .025 second delay tail fuses(plus various other information).

I think you are going to have a very long search ahead of you.

Good luck!

Hi Takao

thanks very much. Yes, I went thru pacific wrecks as they seemed to be the only resource online with actual dates for bombing missions in North Borneo. But the additional links you gave are very useful. I will go through and see if I can locate my uncle's bombing mission in which he was shot down near Bario.

cheers

Do you have a name?

How about his squadron/bomb group?

Have you run his name + "MACR" through search engines?
MACR = Missing Air Crew Report

For MACRs you can try here:
http://www.accident-report.com/usaf.html
or here:
http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/src/db.asp
This site is also good:

No. No record of which bombing unit he was with. Will give the MACR a go. Apparently their B-24 was shot down and it crashed into a mountain range near the village of Bario in late 1944 after a bombing mission over Labuan. The aircraft sustained damage and did not make it over the mountain range.

That is all we know sadly.
