Good afternoon all,

Above per ...

Article leads with a good picture of the unit.

Note term "treaty cruiser".

Note the mention of the initial teak quarterdeck.

Note the Nimitz reply to the inquisitive newsman.

Article mentions Navy Secretary James Forrestal. As an aside, after WWII, Forrestal became the first US Secretary of Defense in 1947. He had a psychological breakdown and committed suicide at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Maryland (metro Washington, D.C.)

To all,

The article was about the USS Indianapolis not Independence.

From the article: “Appeals for leniency for McVay were registered by several high-ranking naval officers, including Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the revered commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet. As an ensign, he had served briefly aboard the Indianapolis after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.”

It makes me wonder how many decades Nimitz wa an ensign!! He graduated from Annapolis in 1905 and the USS Indianapolis was not commissioned until 1932!!!

What I find funny about the mistake is, it is so easy to check and to figure out that it is wrong. Oh well!
