DD Eskimo and Operation Dukedom

Post by Jordi Comas » 18 Feb 2023 14:39

Hi all

Did destroyer Eskimo participate with Force 61 in the hunt for Japanese heavy cruiser Haguro in May 1945?

Thank you very much!

No. Nor was she part of Force 62 or 67 that were involved in Operation Dukedom. Eskimo disappears off the radar in my reference sources between the end of March 1945 and the beginning of June 1945.

Multiple sources give Force 61 as comprising:-
Queen Elizabeth
Richelieu
Cumberland
Tromp (Dutch)
21ACS - cruiser Royalist, CVE Hunter, Khedive, Shah & Emperor
26th DF - Saumarez, Venus, Verulam, Virago, Vigilant
11th DF - Rotherham
10th DF - Tartar & Nubian.

Force 62 comprised
Nigeria
Roebuck, Racehorse & Redoubt plus Rocket later ( the last redirected on 14 May from escorting a troopship)

Force 67
RFA Olwen (tanker) escorted by destroyer Penn.
