I know that the main gun of Musashi fired Sankaidan in this naval battle, but despite the rumors, I have not found any written records of this aspect. So I'm curious where this statement comes from. Is there any evidence to support this statement?During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Musashi faced American carrier based aircraft and fired Sankaidan from its main gun. The salvo generated a muzzle blast equivalent to a Category 16 typhoon, blowing 50 people from the anti-aircraft gun crew on the deck into the sea, causing over 100 people to faint. At the same time, it also damages the optical sight on the anti-aircraft gun.

I have read that the concussive force of the 18.1" guns was quite massive, and the very reason both the Yamato & Musashi were later fitted with elaborate shrouds/turrets even for the triple 25mm AA cannons.

There is a book I read that does state that the 18.1 inch guns were this powerful. It stated that they wanted to demonstrate how powerful the guns were so they put guinea pigs in cages and placed them on the deck by the turret. They fired the guns and the result was the almost complete liquidation of the guinea pigs. So it seems logical that this statement is true.Yang wrote: ↑08 Apr 2023 14:33I saw this statement online.I know that the main gun of Musashi fired Sankaidan in this naval battle, but despite the rumors, I have not found any written records of this aspect. So I'm curious where this statement comes from. What has happened has happened, history is history. We must accept and embrace the things that we are passionate about and the atrocities that had been committed. Denying history is an atrocity in itself.

For training with the M198 155mm Howitzer, & similar 155 caliber cannon we maintained a 300 meter wide fan or triangle safely zone in front of each cannon. A apex of this triangle at the cannons muzzle. This exclusion zone was based on several factors, which included the over pressure from the prpoellant fired. At a minimum anyone at the edges of this zone would suffer long term or permanent hearing damage. I recall one of our medics had permanent ear damage from walking though this area during firing drill. The closer to the source the greater the increase in damage to the rest of the body from the overpressure wave. Never saw anyone closer to the muzzle than the unfortunate medic. There were tests in the 1920s by the US Ordnance corps using livestock, usually hogs. A those placed a few meters from the muzzle of the 155 cannon of the era were knocked off their feet and physically injured when the cannon fired.
