US Navy Floating Mobile Dockyards - Pacific Theater 1942 - 1945

Post by Richard Stone » 30 Jun 2023 18:26

The attached article discusses the general arrangement and use by the US Navy of large floating mobile dockyards for the repair and servicing of US warships, including battleships and aircraft carriers. These floating dockyard enabled the US Navy to handle ship repairs close to the combat theaters and to expedite the return of the ships to service.

Some of the design work was performed by marine engineering firms. Admiral Husband Kimmel, following his resignation from the US Navy after the Pearl Harbor attack, aided in the design work. He was credited with providing important engineering guidance and support that enabled these dockyards to handle the large US battleships and aircraft carriers.

The article was printed in the November 1945 edition of the USA professional military reference magazine ‘Military Review’.

Richard Stone,

Did Kimmel retire or resign from the US Navy? It is my understanding that if you resign you forfeit all retired military benefits; retirement pay, medical care, etc.
