Go to http://www.centurytel.net/midway/

For photos, scroll down to "Torpedo Eight in Color" and click

For straight lists of pilots and planes, scroll down farther to "Appendix" and click; then click "Appendix Four - US Air Groups"; then pick "US Carrier Air Groups" and click; scroll down to VT-8 and click your choice "Planes of Torpedo Eight" or "Pilots and Gunners of Torpedo Eight" and voila!

Don't be distracted by the choice of "US Carrier Air Group Personnel Bios," there's only one squadron with this information, VF-3.

For dedicated discussion of the Battle of Midway there's always the Battle of Midway Roundtable group.

In the meantime, here's a list of VT-8 pilots from Hornet at Midway:

LtCdr. J. C. Waldron
Lt. R. A. Moore
Lt. J. C. Owens Jr.
Ltjg. G. H. Campbell
Ltjg. J. D. Woodson
Ens. W. B. Abercrombie
Ens. W. W. Creamer
Ens. R. A. Divine
Ens. H. J. Ellison
Ens. W. P. Evans Jr.
Ens. G. H. Gay Jr.
Ens. J. P. Gray
Ens. R. L. Karzmar
Ens. H. P. Kenyon Jr.
Ens. F. Mears
Ens. U. M. Moore
Ens. G. W. Teats
AMM1C R. B. Miles

There were six VT-8 TBFs that operated out of Midway itself. All were shot down and crews killed except that of Ens Albert Earnest. He and his tunnel gunner, RM3c Harry Ferrier, survived, making it back to Midway with an extremely shot up plane. Killed aboard Earnest's TBF was Sea1c Jay Manning, the turret gunner. Earnest's TBF was 8-T-1 b/n 00380. Earnest was awarded a Navy Cross for making, in effect, a lone attack on the Japanese after the rest of his flight had been eliminated and a second Navy Cross for getting the plane back to the Island, knowing that it was the only surviving aircraft of the type's combat premier. Earnest was later awarded a third NC for action in the Solomons. He retired as a Captain. Ferrier was commissioned and retired as a commander. I've known Bert Earnest for years and he's a fine gent. Ernest and Ferrier refer to themselves as "the other sole survivors of VT-8".

Other Midway based VT-8 TBFs were

8-T-16 b/n 00399
Lieut Langdon Feiberling
Ens Jack Wilke
RM2c Arthur Osborne

8-T-19 b/n 00398
Ens Charles Brannon
AM3c William Lawe
AoM3c Charles Fair

8-T-12 b/n 00391
Ens Victor Lewis
AM3c Nelson Carr
EM3c John Mehltretter

8-T-4 b/n 00383
Ens Oswald Gaynier
Ens Joseph Hissem (TDY from VP-24)
Sea1c Howard Pitt

8-T-5 b/n 00384
AMM1c Darrel Woodside
Ptr2c Arnold Meuers
AOM3c Lyonal Orgeron (TDY from VP-44)

Regards,

Rich
