Excellent stuff Juha, thank you

One wonders if they had any idea of how to overcome rain. Not only would the hearing guy have very wet ears  but a more serious note, rain hiting the reflector would have created a lot of local sound. I'd guess it just didn't really work well, the rainclouds would be able to mask any aircraft noise, if they flew above them. Maybe only good for those cold clear nights!

Here's a photo of my Grandfather and my Mum, taken in late 1939, Buitenzoerg, Dutch East Indies.

My Opa's name was Ignacio Eisma, he served in the KNIL as a Wachtmeester in the (2nd Battery) 1st Howitzer Artillery Battalion (A-I-HW). He was captured in Soekeboemi and died as a POW in the Rintin POW camp, Burma-Siam Railway in March 1943.
Mum was a civilian POW and she survived the war.

I believe he is wearing part of his KNIL uniform in the attached photo.

Cheers

While this has been discussed in the Japanese section of AHF, I felt it should be mentioned here.

For those interested in 'the other side of the hill', Leiden University Press has published a translation of a volume of the Japanese official history that covers the Dutch East Campaign. The Invasion of the Dutch East is the third volume of the Senshi Sōsho series. Covers the prewar planning and preparation, the operational orders, intelligence preparation, and the actual operations. In all, a wonderful addition to any study of the campaign.

The book is a bit pricy but well worth the cost if one is truly interested in the campaign. My copy is already heavily tabbed.

For those on a budget, Lieden, through their open access initiative has the book available in .pdf for free The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies

The focus of this Dutch translation effort is to translate those volumes that address the invasion of the DEI. Translation of the Senshi Sōsho Volume 26: The Operations of the Navy in the Dutch East Indies and the Bay of Bengal start a few years ago and is current scheduled for release in 2018. However, I haven't found any new information of this effort, only some posts on the web that state either May or Sep 2018.

Your best bet for updates on this is http://stonebooks.com/ as they are keeping tabs on this book and have contact with the publisher.
The latest update from their news section is dated Feb 28, 2018.
News from the Corts Foundation
26 February 2018

After our review of The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies, the folks at the Corts Foundation—they are the ones who translated the volume and prepared it for publication—sent this info:

"We do notice the great interest for our first publication as the orders still are arriving at L.U.P., including a large number of downloads. Last week we discussed with Leiden University our next publication: Senshi Sosho volume 26, The Operations of the Navy in the Dutch East Indies and the Bay of Bengal. You will find some new particulars about the operations at Tarakan in this volume. It is our intention to publish this volume (about the same size as S.S. volume 3) in September 2018. We will conclude our series with an air force volume which will be published in 2020."
