Handwriting help
Re: Handwriting help
On the prior picture with the caption of “Ruane” or so, I tend to lean toward GregSingh’s suggestion of misspelled word, probably as it sounded to the writer at the time.
I think it very well could have been Rouen if you compare the two pictures.

Re: Handwriting help
I got a reply, and he said it wasn't Rouen. His guess is a town on the Channel coast. That makes Loic's guess that there are limestone cliffs in the background something to go on.
Re: Handwriting help
Then the writing is wrong. As you already pointed out, it's hard to find a coastal town with similar spelling.
Dieppe has houses located against the cliff, but I couldn't find the exact spot. Also it was damaged during botched Canadian landing in 1942, it's not easy to find period photos. Problem is the lack of period address books for those coast towns, address of that hotel would have solved it.

Re: Handwriting help
How about Ruoms, France, instead?
The spelling would come close.

Re: Handwriting help
Another tricky one... I'm trying to figure out what I think is a placename in Russia written on the back of a German photo I own. Does anyone here have an idea what the name might be?
(The photo is interesting in a way, as it's taken the same day as the Battle of Stalingrad was officially over, but with the difference that here, Red Army soldiers are PoWs.)

Re: Handwriting help
Here's one more, a little Christmas brainteaser. I'm trying to figure out whether the fire in the photo was an act of sabotage, as there were acts of sabotage in other places (time bombs, etc). Orel was captured early in October, and judging by the attitudes of the soldiers in the photo, this must be after the Germans took the city.
