Hi.
I have a 47 page document written by Leibstandarte Veteran Erwin Bartmann of his life story. I’ve had this for a number of years, but to respect his privacy never had this translated especially as his verbal stories and tales were good enough for me. Sadly he has just passed away and I have this story that I would now like translated. Erwin was very open and happy to talk about his experiences and featured in many many books. So i am sure he would like this out in the open. However as you may have guessed I don’t speak German very well and I don’t trust online translators to do the job due to military terms or unit designations.
So I am looking for someone willing to translate this. I would only send 1 page at a time, which you would translate and send back to me in English and I would then send you the following page. This is to make sure that I don’t just send the whole 47 pages on to someone who keeps it for themselves and I hear nothing after that.
I’ve listened to the Erwins stories for years and some of his stories were funny, some shocking and some tragic. His stories are your reward for your translation.
Please note though in the last couple of years he has been getting a visitor who has been interviewing him for a book. I believe that the book was close to getting published. However I still can’t find anything if I search online. So I don’t tread on this Authors toes and perhaps my translated text matches a lot of his book(Making his book not such a good read) if he is on this forum and has concerns he can PM me. I am sure that Erwin told me stories that are perhaps not in either the document I have or in the book, but all these things combined give us more history of the man. So I hope he won’t mind.

Erwins funeral is on Thursday and i will speak to his son then and ask if he is happy with his dad's story being aired on a public forum. I don't see a problem as he was happy for his biography to be published and has put his recollections in several books.
But i think out of respect to his son i should ask first. However again i would still only do it 1 page at a time so a page is posted and then translated and so on etc. I'd rather i read a new page every few days than post 47 pages and not get a translation for weeks or even months. Thats just my perogative.

Nothing wrong with respect to anyone.
AFAWK a page by page translation is more easy to do then overwhelm anyone with the whole work.

Very sorry to hear that Erwin has finally gone to Walhalla i have been telephoning him but no answer and now my fears have been confirmed.

Erwin and I worked on his Memoirs which will soon be published by Helion and Company. We are in the final stages of preparation with the book expected to be on the stands soon - I am likely to have an exact date for this sometime in March. It's sad that Erwin, who became a good friend, will not see his story on the bookstands but he did see the final draft and signed the publishing contract. As a matter of interest there was a two-page article in the Daily Mail shortly after his death - I think it may still be available online.
As a starting point in writing Erwin's memoirs I translated documents you refer to but since a publishing contract is in force they might well now be under copyright - I am however happy to send a printed copy of these to any of Erwin's friends providied they agree not to post it on the internet.
I know he greatly appreciated the interest shown in his life as a Leibstandarte soldier by members of this and other forums.

With great interest I read the autobiography of Erwin Bartmann. After finishing the book however, I do have a few questions.
Do you know how his brother (and his family) survived the war and how did his parents fare? Unfortunately this was not mentioned in the book.

Sorry for not replying for so long. I just saw this. I know they all survived. His brother was never in at the front and had a cushy number in the Air Ministry. Not so sure about the dad, but I know his mum kept things of his(Photos and docs etc) and gave them back to him after this POW release.
