Liebes Mädel, schönes Kind

The blackbird sings in the early morning.
The starling sings in the early morning
the most beautiful songs of love,
In the spring, year after year.
And so, when we are marching
Across the field to the trees
The song of the little birds
Accompanies us.
And suddenly the NCO calls out:
SING! Three, four, yes, yes,yes,
Dear maiden, lovely child,
You, you, you,
Indeed you do not know how faithful we are.
You, you, you, because we are indeed soldiers
And not heartbreakers.
l: We love only one maiden
and that is you alone l:
On a Sunday morning,
As we are marching through the countryside,
By a garden wall,
Stands a little maiden.
She had picked red roses
With which to greet me.
And it was as if I myself were
Pressed firmly to her heart.
And suddenly the NCO calls out:...
Poetic license taken here and there, of course.
