Rope knot names German>English
Rope knot names German>English
I'm working on translating the Pionier Fibel to English, and knots are something out of my experience. The names of the knots aren't in my dictionaries.
English names for the below knots would be appreciated. A translation of the entire captions would be wonderful.
Thanks,
John

Re: Rope knot names German>English
Hi Jbaum
It's possible to translate, but actually there is no existing or universally valid reference to knot names.
For example, we have here in Germany 3 main branche, which uses knots:
-Mountaineers
-Navy and Military
-Fire Departement, Pathfinder, etc.
They are using the same knots, but have different names.
I think, that's the same in English language. Picture 176 Weberknoten can be translated as
-reef knot
-weavers knot
-crown knot
See the problem?
See: Clifford W. Ashley: The Ashley Book of Knots.
Best regards

Re: Rope knot names German>English
What would be OK, is for someone to recognize the knot, and tell me the name in English. So far I have knots 176 and 177 named as a square knot and half hitch knot. The others may be more difficult.
Thanks for your reply.

No such thing as a knot in the Navy - the are called Bends & Hitches!
Image 176 - Reef Knot (which kind of tramples all over the 'no knot' thing!)
Image 177 - Two Half Hitches (used with a Round Turn to form a Round Turn And Two Half Hitches)

Thanks guys, I have all but two, so the names will be listed in German for all, and in English for the names that are available.
