Hi Greg,
Thanks for your translation.

I had to look it up myself, Ausgeher is an old word and not in use anymore.
It means: Bote/Austräger/Ausfahrer/Zusteller, translated: Messenger, Courier, Delivery Agent, so in general he worked as a postman.

Hard to say, lots of possibilities here.

My bet would be on Ruhter or Rühter, but I wouldn't bet big. :D
Ruhter sounds Dutch...
