I found some photos of the prince, but I'm not quite sure it's the same man. The rank is the same (the prince was an Oberleutnant), though. In 1940, when he visited his grandfather for the last time, he held the rank of Fahnenjunker.

This Oberleutnant has a new little friend. Can anyone figure out what is written on the back? The only thing I get is "25. Mai"... (Photo colorized by a free online colorization tool.)

What a sweet message! What words to use in lines 2 and 3 for an accurate translation?

"To you, my dearest girl,
as a small greeting from xxx
xxx to our May 25th.
I hold you so infinitely
dear, your Horst."

I think "vast distance" or "great distance" does make sense.

Ah, so it's more a distance in geography than in time. Well, that makes sense. Thanks, all!

A couple new challenges. This one is from Slantsy near Leningrad (Saint Petersburg). I think the text gives a hint about the women in the photo, but can't for the life of me figure out what it says. Russian women going to Germany as "guest workers"? Any takers?
