sütterlin and WW I military information
Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Roman, Julius was a cattle merchant in Herborn, Germany. Julius was a Viehhandler (with 2 dots above the a in German). That is a cattle dealer in translation according to my father, Laurence (Lothar). (He must have somehow looked that up)
Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Correct, it´s obviously the "Vorzeigegeld" from the letter. I gave you the source already yesterday in the shortened link. BTW, Majdanek is in the east of Poland.
Thanks, Yan (still I don´t know if feminin or masculin?), for the update of the profession of Julius S..
I left school decades ago but there is no need to translate German into English or vice versa, spare your energy
If you´re in possession of files in Polish (eg. from the Majdanek memorial) I can help too as I`m fluent in this language.

Thank you for all the help. We are getting info on our family that we never had before. I am one of two sons of Laurence Salomon. My father was a professor of African History. Some of his life's work can be seen at:

Hello Yan,
the first file from today is the birth entry for Max Siesel from the Altenstadt municipal office.
I´ll transcribe the text for you (and Hiltraut is most welcome to complete the text):

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Just a note: Here in my area it´s very common not only to call relatives by blood eg. uncle or ount but also neighbours or other familiar persons. So it was common to call the wartime comrade of my grandfather (who was already deceased then) uncle Martin and his wife aunt Fanny.
I only mention this because of the two aunts in your letter, though I´m not sure if this custom is used elsewhere too.

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Roman, I would read the name as "Hindheimer", although the letter "H" seems a bit distorted.
Karoline Siesel, geborene ........,
I include a clipping for Betty Wertheim. I am not sure where to put her; could it be a sister of Max?

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
I bet you´re right with "Hindheimer", Hiltraut. Yes, she surely is a sister of Max. The text in your screenshot reads that she had three siblings.
1.Hedwig, born 1892
2. Max (born 1894),
3. Now you found Betty.
4. Only one unknown (until now) brother/sister left.

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Look what I found about the Siesel children:
The unknown Julius Siesel, born in 1891 and died in Auschwitz in 1942:

And onother unknown brother, Fritz, born in 1895:

Betty, born 1902, and murdered likely in Sobibor:

While Hedwig perished in Treblinka accoring the information there:

But what a suprise, there is still a new family member: Arthur, born 1899

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
It seems the information that Betty had three siblings is totally wrong.
Here is another son of Meier and Karoline Siesel, William: And then I found the Social Security Applications and Claims, 1936-2007 for Helene Siesel, married "Frank", parents Meier Siesel and Karoline Lindheimer. She was born on Oct. 22nd, 1907 and died in Feb. 1980.

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Roman, do you have any information on my Great Grandfather, Sally Salomon, born 11/29/1868 and passed away in Herborn on 03/23/1939. He was mentioned in the letter as being in bed and ill.
thanks for the great info! I do not have a ton of information on the Siesels but I am trying to get info from my cousins (Rose Siesel's son and his kids).
Sincerely,
Yan

Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
We were there a few years ago. I didn't know it was online also. Is there anything on Sally's parents? We don't know our history before Sally? You are amazing at your research! Both of you! Just Incredible!
Re: sütterlin and WW I military information
Thank you all for your help and want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I received a few new letters from my cousin just now. Not sure if anyone has time to take a look at these...
