Some more German help please....

Post by Sam Wren » 12 Oct 2018 08:26

The part in red is giving me trouble

Vor uns wird eine Frau verwundet, die in den Straßengaben flüchten will. Flüchtlinge beugen sich über sie.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks.

Straßengaben => Straßengraben

In front of us a woman is wounded who wants to flee into the road ditch. Refugees bend over her.

Thanks Puck,

When I first read it I thought that it did say "Straßengraben" then I checked the original book to see if I had typed it in wrong but it was not a typo. So is "Straßengaben" a standard, widespread variation of "Straßengraben" or a regional variation?

"Straßengaben" is a typo, even when it appears so in the original text.
Straße = road
Graben = ditch
but Gabe = donation, aims.

Thanks history1. By "typo" I was referring to my OCR copy, not to the book itself, but, as you have indicated, since my OCR copy matched the book then it was a typo in book also.
