Greg, I would read the word "Hänse" if you compare the "s" to the "sch" below him. What do you think?

Yes, it certainly looks like an "s" by comparison.
I did run some scans for 1940 Obergefreiter Hänse and was discouraged by the results when got hits only for Hänhe...

Yes, I also only found a handful of the surname "Hänse", but the "Obergefreiter" or "1940" did not match.
It also is possible, that in the search engines it might be spelled as "Haense", because of the Umlaut.

there´s no doubt that it´s "Hänse".
I wouldn´t care at all if anyone finds the combination "Obergefreiter Hänse" or "Hänse 1940".
A soldier with such low rank gets unlikely mentioned anywhere in the web when he didn´t get the Iron Cross or the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for a very special deed.
Hence it´s now wonder that Hiltraut didn´t get useful matches/hits.
