Interesting photo. Van der Waal is sadly not listed on the VDK database.

That´s incorrect, Simon, as there are 13 soldiers listed with this name in WWII as KIA/MIA (use only "Waal" as search word in last name) . Based onto the information that he was at this time (March 43) already KIA it remains only one: Jacobus van der Waal. https://www.volksbund.de/en/graebersuc ... 590ccedb5e
He looks to be too young for Gysbertus de Waal, who was 36 years @KIA in April 1942, and also the last name is a bit different. The only other de Waal killed before March 43. At least from those who are published yet.

Ah, it was me mis-typing then, thanks for the info. It's interesting to be able to put faces and places together, not always for the best of outcomes but somehow it makes these old images even more real once you can track them down.
