Understanding records from Ilse Bergbau AG and Bastfaser GmbH, Fehrbellin

Post by familyfinder » 12 Apr 2022 19:30

Hello all,

I was researching a cousin's husband, Jørgen Christian Hansen born 1892 from Denmark, when I ran into these records about work he had done in Ilse Bergbau AG and Bastfaser GmbH, Fehrbellin. I'm having some trouble with the German and would appreciate some help understanding what work he was doing/what role he played in those places. Also, any background on these work camps would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Noel

Hello Noel
From what I can get out of it he seems to have been a kohlenputzer - “coal cleaner” (?) on a half year contract. Many went to work in Germany during the war for various reasons and as unemployment was high in Denmark it was a welcomed opportunity to make some money. It was not as forced labour but encouraged by the Germans, Danish government and even the various trade unions.
Hope this short explanation answers your question.

Thank you! I appreciate the context. That's exactly what I was hoping to learn. Thanks again!

Hello Noel,

just for additional information: You cousin's husband got a flat during his worktime at Ilse Bergbau AG in the "Waldfrieden" settlement. You can find it on the map on page 2 of the following document:
https://www.yumpu.com/de/document/read/ ... g-montalta

There is also a story on page 18 (unfortunately in German) about a woman living at Waldfrieden.

It may add some content to the circumstances.

Kind regards,
Ben
