Translating short German sentence

Post by 2KILFA » 25 Aug 2023 12:16

Can a fluent German speaker properly translate the following sentence to English, down to a T:
''Hohe Ausfälle zehrten weiter an den guten Stämmen der Truppe.''
Translation would be something like this:
''High losses continued to drain the good ??? [Stämmen] of the troops.''
How should the word Stämmen be properly translated in this context and therefore the whole sentence?
Here's an excerpt from the document.

I would go with Stämmen = "morale", which is the spirit, confidence, or good feeling of the troops.

Hi 2Kilfa,

I would translate the term with regular/core staff or cadre.

High losses exhausted further the good core of the unit.

Best regards
Armin

Thank you Armin. I was thinking along the same lines, that 'High losses continued to exhaust/drain the core of good troops'.
