Danke schön Charly!

I shall refer to the numbers of my sources of post 5, earlier in this thread.

(1) gives Messner as CO of II./12 in 10.1944
(3) gives him as CO of II./12 on 01.07.1944
(4) gives him as CO of II./12 on 01.10.1944
(6) gives him as CO of II./12 on 08.05.1945 (which is clearly wrong, since this battalion ceased to exist already in 03.1945)
(11) gives him as CO of II./12 until he got wounded in mid March 1945.
(12) gives him as CO of II./12 on 01.07.1944 and on 01.03.1945
(13) gives him as CO of II./12 on 01.03.1945

(11) also lists him as CO of II./11 without a date, but after Braun.
(12) also lists him as CO of II./11 from 1944 until 11.01.1945.

Would you please provide us with your source(s) that Messner commanded II./11? Is it Mehner? Danke im Voraus!

Mit freundliche Grüsse aus dem Westen,
Frans

Danke Charly,

SS-Hstuf. Hermann Brandt (* 17.03.1907) was Chef of 2. Kp. (which was indeed part of I./6) in August 1941 according to John P. Moore's "Führerliste der Waffen-SS". He succeeded SS-Hstuf. Karl Betzwieser (* 03.07.1912), and was succeeded himself by SS-Ustuf. Fritz Grond (* 04.04.1912).

Best regards,
Frans

Karl Bezwieser was WIA 31 Jul 1941 so Brandt must have taken command early in August.

Kiitos (Thanks) Pena,

In this way the list with commanding officers gets more and more detailed and accurate! Apparently, Betzwieser must have been the company CO (Kp. Chef) only for a short while during July 1941, since I have SS-Ostuf. Ewald Burk (* 19.01.1916) as Kp.Chef on 01.07.1941.

Best regards,
Frans

Grüß dich Sissi. Welcome to Axis History Forum (AHF)!

In John P. Moore's "Führerliste der Waffen-SS" (Portland, USA, 2002) Ewald Burk is listed as follows:
Born 19.01.1916 in Friedensdorf
in 6./T.I.R. 3 in 12.38 as an Ustuf.
in 2./Inf. Rgt. 6 in 2.41 as an Ostuf.
in SS-Geb. AuE Btl. 6 in 10.42 as an Ostuf.
Chef 7./Pol. Inf. Rgt. 3 in 1.43 as an Hstuf.
Missing in action on 14.1.43

I don't know how familiar you are with the above terminology, so I try to explain it a bit more and give some additional info:

Burk served in the 6. Sturm of 3. SS-Totenkopfstandarte "Thüringen" (which was a unit associated with the concentration camp troops, the SS-Totenkopfverbände), in December 1938 as an SS-Untersturmführer (Ustuf. = lieutenant).
He is then listed as being in the 2. Kompanie (Kp.) of SS-Infanterie-Regiment 6 in February 1941 as an SS-Obersturmführer (Ostuf. = 1st lieutenant). This unit was part of SS-Kampfgruppe "Nord", later SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord", fighting in the North of Finland for most of the war. In my personal archive I have listed him as the company commander (Kp. Chef) of 2./SS-Inf. Rgt. 6 on 01.07.1941. Later that month he became Kp. Chef of 3./SS-Inf. Rgt. 6, until he got wounded on 31.07.1941.
Moore lists him then as in SS-Geb. AuE Btl. 6 in 10.42 as an Ostuf. This unit was raised in late 1942 as SS-Gebirgs-Ausbildungs-und-Ersatz-Bataillon "Nord" in Wehlau/Ostpreussen, shortly thereafter transferred to Trautenau/Sudetenland, and in April 1943 to Hallein/Österreich. In October 1943 the battalion's name "Nord" changed to the number 6.
Moore lists him finally as Chef 7./Pol. Inf. Rgt. 3 in 1.43 as a SS-Hauptsturmführer (Hstuf. = captain). So he was company commander of the 7. Kompanie in the II. Bataillon (motorisiert), CO was Hstuf. Karl Liecke, of SS-Polizei-Infanterie-Regiment 3. This battalion formed part of a larger ad hoc battlegroup called Kampfgruppe Fegelein that was sent to southern Russia to stop the Russian breakthrough between the Don and Donetz rivers, west of Stalingrad
Moore does not mention a place where Ewald Burk went missing, but most likely this was 20-30 km. northwest of the Russian town of Kantemirowka, near the present day border between Russia and Ukraine. Source for this is Friedrich Husemann: "Die guten Glaubens waren", Geschichte der SS-Polizei-Division und 4. SS-Polizei-Panzer-Grenadier-Division, Band II, 1939-1945, Munin Verlag, Osnabrück, 1973.

Maybe the German Red Cross can give you more details about his missing.
Maybe the Volksdienst deutscher Kriegsgräber (VDK) can give you information about a possible grave site, if his body has been found.

This is all I have on Ewald Burk. I hope this has been useful to you. Good luck with your research!

Mit freundlichem Gruß,
Frans Nooij

Спасибо Алберт (Thanks Albert)!
But pity that no year is indicated for the transfer on 1 November to the SS Ers. Btl. "Nord": 1941 or 1942???
And can you decipher what has been written with entry "12", especially the name of the unit?
Best regards,
Frans
