Re: SS ID Quiz
I've looked into the Karl Fritzsch ID question a bit more.
Karl Fritzsch was reported missing, believed killed in Berlin, in May 1945, at the age of 41. The photo of the older man 'identified' by the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Wesfalen and displayed by the Flossenbürg Memorial as such, is obviously a pre-war image. (Photos of this type, out of uniform, taken during the war, are extremely rare and almost non-existent.) This would put the real Fritzsch at 36. The man in the photo is plainly older than 36 and also older than 41 if it were dated 1945. It is obviously NOT the famous Karl Fritzsch, but may well be another Karl Fritzsch or Fritsch....a common mistake. (See the von Fritsch Affair in 1938.)
I am informed the bare chested Fritzsch photo has been positively identified as Karl Fritzsch of Auschwitz fame, by several witnesses in a number of post-war legal depositions. It is plainly not the same man as in the other photo.
The result clearly indicates that the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen is mistaken in its identification of Karl Fritzsch. I believe this to be extremely important, given the lack of known images of such a famous man.
Max.
