No Kommandant of KL Sachsenhausen had the name Gustav Wegner
pherhaps he hed other position in the camp.
The only GUstav Wegner I know about in the Sachsenhausen camp was
the Kdr of the SS-Totenkopf Wachsturmbann "Sachsenhausen"
it must be him you are refering to.
Do you kow anything more about him?

Hello Georg,
please pardon me for not being more concise with my query!
Yes, Gustav Wegner was Commander of TK guards at Sachsenhausen.
Thank you Georg for providing the link to his bio, stange though, when
I enter his name in the search box, that link does not appear?
Right now, I am waiting to recieve a 1934 SS Ausweis and a 1938-45
Wehrpass, originally belonging to an SS Unterscharfuehrer, Richard Schade,
a 'career" KL guard at Oranienburg/Sachsenhausen. On one of the pages of
the Wehrpass, Wegner's signature is found and I was curious.
Again Georg, thank you for the help!
Best,
Jolly

Jerome,
thank you for the additional info. to add with Georg's imput.
I don't know why, but it amazes me that so many KL
guards went on to serve at the front. I seems the SS
would have wanted to keep a lid on things and have
KL personnel permanently attached until the end of the war.
Desperate times demand desperate measures.
Interestingly, the "SS Freiwilligen Panzer Grenadier Batl. 18" held
the Honor Title of "Horst Wessel"
Thanks again folks!

There was a number of transfers of personnel between the KZ and front units, in the early days between KZ and Totenkopf DivJolly Man wrote:Jerome,

As a point of further granularity...most of the transfers to the front-line Waffen SS occured from the KL Totenkopfwachsturmbanne (guard units) as opposed to the KL administrative staff, which actually ran the camps. There was less personnel movement out of camp administration for a variety of reasons....actual specialized "skills", need for experienced cadres to man and administer the expansion of the KL system of subcamps during the mid to late war period, and the ever present ability of many old camp hands to make themselves "indispensable" and avoid transfer; some transfers of camp administrative personnel to the front was the result of punitive/disciplinary measures or a need for administrative or medical skills by a frontline unit. The guard units, on the otherhand, were subject to wholesale transfer (often whole companies) once the Russian campaign swung into full fury; conversely the ranks of the guard battalions were replenished by convalescing wounded, further drafts of Volksdeutsch conscripts and A-SS reservists, and Heer troops (up to 10,000 throughout the war, about 20% of the total SS guards who passed through the system). Once camps were shut down, however, many camp administrative personnel were transfered out, many for some reason ending up in SS-PzGd AuE Battlalion 18, at least on paper.
Re: CO of Sachsenhausen KL, Gustav Wegner
Old thread but I need some info on SS-Ostubaf. Gustav Wegner
What I am especially looking for is the date of promotion from SS-Ustuf. to SS-Hstuf.
And if maybe someone knows what he did between 1933 when he entered the NSDAP and SS and his first assignment in SS-Totenkopf Stuba. "Brandenburg" (KL Sachsenhausen) in 1938.
Thanks in advance
Georg

Max and Georg_S,
I had completely forgotten this thread. Thank you for sharing the photos and service record of Gustav Wegner. I've never seen a photo of him before now.
