Yesterday I had a discussion with a friend who claimed his grandfather, a Wehrmacht seargent, served (and died) under Ernst Kaltenbrunner in Northern Italy, April 1945. I, however, never heard RSHA-chief Kaltenbrunner held a field command. My questions are:
1) Did E. Kaltenbrunner hold a field command in Northern Italy (in April 1945)?
2) If so, could he possibly have been involved in a major battle in Northern Italy in late April 1945?
My friend was really upset because I didn't believe him. Therefore I'd really appreciate any help.
Ernst Kaltenbrunner in Italy?

Kaltenbrunner
You only have to read the 1945 Allied interrogations of Kaltenbrunner and Kaltenbrunner's adjutant (SS-Ostubaf Arthur Scheidler) to know that Kaltenbrunner never held any field appointment in Italy at anytime in 1945.
Between 8 April and 8 May 1945 Kaltenbrunner was almost entirely in Austria, between 16-19 April he was in Berlin, and in Austria spent most days conferring with RSHA VI officers, HSSPFs and local Gauleiters until his arrest.
