Hi Jamie,

The LSSAH was the parent unit of the SS-Begleitkommando. I am not sure what year members started to wear the Adolf Hitler cuffband but the original eight members of the BK were selected from various SS Standarten and presented to Hitler at the Kaiserhof Hotel by Sepp Dietrich and remained under Hitler's authority until the end of the war. As the unit grew, SSBK members were rotated from the LSSAH and many served front line duties with the Leibstandarte except for Gesche who originally served in the Division for a short period but was later transferred to Reichsfuhrer-SS when demoted and Darges who served with Wiking when he was asked to leave. Read "Hitler's Personal Security" by Peter Hoffmann, great book and info regarding the history of the SSBK and RSD.

Best,

James

Hi James and Peter

Thanks for the information on Willy Herzberger, Adolf Dirr and Kurt Gildisch.

Regarding Kurt Gildisch what was his rank at the time he became Kdr. He was promoted to SS-Stuf. 01.07.1933 , 3 months later. So was he just an SS-Mann or SS-Scharführer or ?

Regarding Willy Herzberger and Adolf Dirr I am unable to find them in the 1934 DAL and still can't. For Herzberger I have looked as far as SS-Ostubaf. in the DAL in case of later promotion. Adolf Dirr I can't locate in the SS-Stuf. list. Was Dirr promoted straight to SS-Ostuf. on 15.09.1935 and this is the reason I cant find him. Iif so what was his rank at the time of joining the SS-BK on 04.03.1932 ?
Must be my eyes!!. Could someone just give me the list number in the DAL then I can find them both.

any info appreciated
Brian

Hi James

None I'm afraid. I just fly by the seat of my pants with info I get by reading the various posts. I use the 1934 for the names and future career paths of the people listed. In some cases someone can get a humble start to become rising stars if you get my drift! If only they knew how it would end. Our local inter-change library cannot get any of the DAL's from our state library as they don't have them, so I work with what I can.

Hallo,
concerning Arthur Klingemeier, he was no member of the Führerbegleitkommando, although John P.Moore mentioned it in his Führerliste, but commander of SS-Pz.Gren.Ausb.u.Ers.Btl. 1 Berlin - Spreenhagen from September 1943 until the formation of the so called KGr.Mohnke on April 25th 1945 becoming Ia; maybe from April the 15th until April 25th 1945, he led a battle group formed from the SS-Pz.Gren.AuE-Btl 1, but the group seems to be not in action until the fightings in Berlin.

Arthur Klingemeier: * 24.2.13 Kummerfeld, gest. 1997 Wiesbaden ?, SS-Nr.25 936, 3.35 Ustuf.i.10./LSSAH , 11.39 Hstuf.u. Chef,6./LSSAH , 1.43 Hstuf.u. z.b.V.,Pz.GR.2, 21.6.43 Stubaf, 6.44 Stubaf.u. Kdr.SS-Pz.Gr.AuE.Btl.1, 7.44 Kdr.SS-PzGren.E.Btl.1, 4.45 Stubaf.i. Begl.Kdo.d.Führers. † 1. 5.45 Berlin, Moore Führerliste, s.a. DAL WaSS 1.7.44, unfortunaltely I could not rember the scource for his death 1997 Wiesbaden, maybe this is wrong!!!

Hello Roland,

That is correct. Even though there were units of the LSSAH as well as one of it's former Divisional Commanders defending the Govt., it did not automatically mean that they were part of Hitler's actual SSBK even though they shared the same unit formation (LSSAH).

Best,

James

I would like to hear more about the specific role of the SSBK during the Röhm purge. I think this very topic has not been covered well enough in literature. The only ascertained facts (to my knowledge) are:

1) Kurt Gildisch was assigned special tasks: murder of Klausener and arrests of Karl Ernst and Dr. Erwin Villain. I am not aware if he was chosen because of his SSBK position or regardless of it, because of his character and "suitability" for that kind of tasks. IIRC, Gildisch testified that he had small group of men with him. It was not mentioned if these men came from LAH proper or SSBK (although technically SSBK belonged to the LAH).

2) Small grouping (at least one carload) of SSBK members were present in Bad Wiessee, together with the Führerschutzkommando of Bavarian state police. All the arrests were technically carried out by FSK, under Kriminalkommissar Schmidbauer who was taken into the SS the following day (SS-Ostuf. since 01.07.1934!).

It appears that most of the SSBK members remained in their regular duties, such as driver, valet etc. but some had more sinister assignments.

I note that the last entry was almost a year ago. I met SS-Sturmbannführer Kempka in 1974, SS-Hauptsturmführer Helmut Beermann (who took care of the mail coming into the Reich Chancellery as part of his "normal, daily" duties), and I knew SS-Sturmbannführer Otto Günsche (we first met at the reunion of the 1st SS Pz. Korps in Nassau/Lahn in May, 1974), with whom I had dinner just a few weeks before his death in 2003. Regrettably, I am also reaching an age where memory is fading....

I think it refers to the Begleitkommando der Führer ?
