Thank you very much for yet another unique and valuable contribution, Phil.
I find Lombard to be one of the most interesting of all the Waffen-SS leaders, and am always pleased to see new bits of information and documentation on him.

His English was roughly 100% better than my German.

Hi Phil-
Thanks for the post. I used to visit Herr Lombard at his apartment in Munich in the later 1980's. He was a very kind old man. General Lombard lived in the USA during World War One and was briefly held as an enemy alien until his uncle a naturalized American posted bond for him. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and attended his ROTC program. After WW1 he returned to Germany and worked for Federal Express and Ford Motors. I regret that because of his age it was not possible to prick his memory too often. No doubt he took a great many revelations to the grave with him.

Thanks!
(another) Phil

These are very nice, Steph. I have my own copy of the first photo- with personalized envelope dated 1984- but signed on the reverse; the 2nd photo is new to me and great to see. Are these in your personal collection?

Best wishes,
~ Mike

Hi Mike,

yes, they are in my collection. The last one is on thick paper and looks like it was a copy from a newspaper picture.
I also have a small newspaper cut-out that I attach.

I'm sorry to hear he died in 1992 a few years after the last photograph was taken. Here is a biography in German for interested readers:

Best regards.

Best regards.
I can' t find any confirmation for the following information there:
28. September - 1. Oktober 1944: 23. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS "Kama” (kroatische Nr. 2)

To my opinion this is not the case !

Lombard- ein engagierter Judenmörder

#14

Post by jeweste » 06 Jan 2007, 14:24

One should also keep in mind, that this "kind old man" was a notorious anti-semetic and national-socialist.
He ordered and participated in the mass-killings of Jews in summer 1941, ordered the "rücksichtslose Befriedung und Entjudung" in the area of the Pripjet swamps.
On August 1, 1941, he ordered: "Es bleibt kein männl. Jude leben, keine Restfamilie i.d. Ortschaften". "No Jew has to stay alive, no families will remain in the villages" By mid August 1941, Lombard reported the number of Jews killed : 6,504. Even more infamous is the notorious order by Kommandostab RFSS to SS Kav.-Rgt., to drive women and children into the swamps.
See: Cüppers, Martin: Gustav Lombard - ein engagierter Judenmörder aus der Waffen-SS, in: Klaus-Michael Mallmann; Gerhard Paul (ed.): Karrieren der Gewalt. Nationalsozialistische Täterbiographien. Darmstadt 2004, p. 145-155.
cheers

Is his SS-Nummer correct on the German Wikipedia page? It seems a bit high for a 1933 entry.
