I've some questions about Wilhelm Schmidl.
I'm unable to read his entry-date in the SS and the party.
So if somebody can tell me that it would be much appreciated.
And it's said that he was promoted to SS-Ostuf d.R. der Waffen-SS on 1-11-44 but he was also degraded to SS-Hauptscharführer. Does someone knows when that took place?????
And I've found this on the VDK-website, is this a correct DoD???
Nachname: Schmidl
Vorname: Wilhelm
Dienstgrad:
Geburtsdatum: 04.05.1910
Geburtsort:
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 10.02.1945
Todes-/Vermisstenort: nicht verzeichnet
Furthermore I also wanted to say that this is a very interesting thread, can't agree more with the others who already said this.
Greetings,
Mike

Thanks Jérôme,
But that was not the info I was looking for, this info I already had because you posted it earlier already in this thread.
I'm looking for his SS entrydate and his party entrydate, seen in his file you posted here as well. But I can't read it so well and therefor I'm asking for these two dates.....
And I asked if his DoD, as mentioned on the VDK-site, is correct.
I also asked for the date when he was degraded to SS-Hschaf.
Greetings,
Mike

Thank you very much for posting this information. I found the names of many people that I knew, including my grandfather. He never had any papers to associate him with the SS. At the end of the war, he was in a hospital and the hospital staff burned all the uniforms and documents so that no connection between the Waffen-SS and Heer could be made. Documents at home were also destroyed by my family to protect my grandfather's identity (for their protection) and the Americans were nice enough to destroy pictures along with taking my great grandfather hostage after the war was over. It is really nice to see some documents like this.
Although there many names that I recognised of people that I knew, there are a few of note that did not appear in any of the lists that were early members and were with the unit until late into the war:
SS-Obersturmbannführer Rudolf Sandig
SS-Sturmbannführer Ralf Tiemann
SS-Hauptsturmführer Rolf Möbius
These are just ones that I noticed, but I am sure there are others not on the list.
Thank you again for posting these documents,
Michael

John,
A thousand or more German POWs after capture were brought back to the UK and interrogated. This was post D-day (6 June 1944). Some of the more interesting were interrogated in the London District Cage (LDC). Such was the case with the the one above. When I have time I will post a few more .
In the UK these can be found in the UK National Archives, Kew, Class List/Record Group WO 208 - just look through the finding aid index for the individual files.
Fortunately for you, John, over there in the USA, British intelligence obviously had you mind because they gave copies of all this stuff to US intelligence. You can find it at US NARA College Park in Record Group 498 (USFET-ETOUSA) Box 1 through to 110 onwards; LDC files in Boxes 30-31. Incidentally there is no Entry No. for this RG.
Even more LDC interrogations can be found in RG 165 - Entry 179 - Boxes 718-723 and 736-739.
Worth a trip to DC what with the USHMM reference I gave you some time ago............
