Max.

Pretty obscure, I agree, but if it is indeed Harald Wiesmann, and if that's the same Wiesmann who headed the Gestapo in Kladno (mentioned on p. 273 of Deschner's Reinhard Heydrich), then he's at least somewhat significant- as one of the destroyers of Lidice. I would not have guessed that your last photo showed Dr. Haase, Max- A name we're all familiar with, but by no means a well-known face.

Mike,
It is the same one. The difference is that Wiesmann is not so well known outside the old Czechoslovakia or dedicated researchers of the Kladno Gestapo. Haase is and he's on the very well known Wikipedia, where the posted image came from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werner_Haase . Wiesemann's portrait here came from a German language or Czech website. Even though Wiesemann played a part in the destruction of Lidice, I wouldn't mind betting that the vast majority of users of this forum have never even heard of him. The whole point of this thread is to open up IDs for everyone, not trying to find the most obscure and difficult images to post. We started off with some fairly easy pics and decided that they were far too easy. Hence the more difficult ones, but still names that most people know. I've got some very obscure portraits of SS officers, but it's not worth posting them because nobody will get them and that defeats the purpose of this thread.
I think the rule is...not too easy, but not too difficult, just to keep it flowing...wouldn't you agree?
Max.

You are right, George. It is Harald Wiesmann - head of the Kladno gestapo responsible for massacre in Lidice.

Max,
Maybe his last rank was only hauptsturmführer but I don't think he would be a less known person in SS than Kappler, Lange, Knochlein, Barbie and many others who commited crimes against humanity.
In addition this crime was carried out as a response to killing of Heydrich who was the most famous person killed during the war. So I thought that members of this forum could know him.

But next time I will post more general person :)

G.

p.s. on this photo is Wiesmann in Lidice (on the right) and then at his trial

I'm sorry, but I cannot agree. I think you'll find that those you have mentioned here are much more recognizable to the average SS researcher. These have been well known names in the western world for many years and have therefore had much more circulation worldwide.
I think some others might also disagree that Heydrich was the most famous person killed during the war. Although important and well known, you should remember that his death is more high profile to you because you are from the former Czechoslovakia and I certainly don't agree that a member of the Kladno Gestapo is widely known outside Czechoslovakia because he played a role in the destruction of Lidice. I know him because I researched Heydrich and wrote a book on him, but if you took a straw poll you wouldn't find too many people who had even heard of Wiesmann, let alone what he did.
Anyway, we digress. Thanks for your participation and for posting the other pics.
Whose turn is it?....over to George....
Max.

on this photo is Wiesmann in Lidice (on the right)
SS-Sturmbannführer with binoculars is Martin Wolf - coordinator of cultural activities. His post-WW2 activities are unknown.
