Well, Ivan, you are in Serbia so the hostages are also very possibly in Serbia.
What about BdS Belgrade, Leiter IV - SS-Stubaf Bruno Sattler
Hello, Steve

Not him, but the city where the execution took place is near Belgrade. It was one of the most photographed executions of WWII and the mystery man was the one who sentenced those people to death - and it's what he's infamous for (they were tried and executed the same day).

Hello, Stuart

No, but extremely close! :) (Unlike our mystery person's, Wetzling's photos are relatively known.)

The aforementioned trial (kangaroo court), presided by the mystery man, and execution(s) took place two days after Hitler's 52nd birthday. The court was formed by an elite regiment of the Heer and the mystery man was a guest judge. (At the time, Wetzling and the mystery man served in the same SS division.)

Hitlers 50th was 1939. This event occurred pre-war?

Ah, I apologise for misleading, I meant 52nd! :D (Corrected.)

Basically, if you just type the date (22 April 1941) in Google and especially Google images, you'll soon find images and info on the execution - and the name of the judge, i.e. the mystery person. As I wrote, it was one of the most photographed executions of the war and there are still unseen images of the event resurfacing from time to time, around Europe. There's also a colour footage of the execution, which we discussed a couple of times here in AHF, the same as the mystery person. Both images and footage of the execution caused quite a stir in Germany in the 1990s, when they were first published (there were even big Neonazi protests against the exhibition the images were part of).

You tracked the right guy - it's SS-Sturmbannführer Rudolf Hoffmann of the "Reich" Division (and later of the II SS Armoured Corps), the presiding judge of the infamous Pančevo executions of 22 April 1941, whose images, showing men of the "Großdeutschland" Regiment executing civilians, largely ruined the German myth of a clean Heer, in the 1990s (the title of the exhibition was "Vernichtungskrieg - Verbrechen der Wehrmacht" and "Der Spiegel" advertised it publishing a picture of a GD officer finishing off a victim in Pančevo, on the front cover; the image became iconic and a symbol of Heer war crimes; "Der Spiegel" also published the colour footage of the execution, in their documentary "Das Dritte Reich in Farbe").

Hoffmann was previously discussed here viewtopic.php?p=907086#p907086 and here viewtopic.php?p=1647880#p1647880

Over to you J.!
