Heydrich assassination.

#1

Post by witness » 21 Dec 2002, 04:01

In May 27 1942 Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated by four Chezchs.
Two of them were dropped on the parachutes by Brits.
Injured Heydrich chased one of the assassins and managed to
wound him.
I am very interested in the details of this operation. How was it planned ?
The names of the participants ? Who was the wounded one ?
Their fate after the war ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Witnessed,

I just noticed this site:http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/prague.html

I gave it a very quick look and it doesn't sound bad for a start.

If I happen to find more on that i'll let you know.

Stan gun "misfired ''..
Another pistol "jammed"..
The fire-arms were not particularly reliable in those times ..

LOL Witness :)

My wife's witnessing me all the time to see if I show any
sign of understanding

And what's worse she threatened to join in and side with my opponents

Says I, ok, hon, go ahead and do it, but you'll have to take some
English lessons to be able to interact (she speaks French and Spanish,
but no English) :P

At that point she looked at me like my cat when I dislodge him from
my pillow and then ... "Oh, well, ok, after all I wouldn't see me
stuck to a keyboard for hours like you do.." and stepped into her
tv room to see some toons.
Now I realize how English can save a hubbie from "collateral damages"
even 57 years after war's end

You may find a lot of books about Heydrich's assassination. (The Czechs parachutists were only two, not four; other were involved as 'supporters', and all were killed afterwards.)

A very interesting feature about Heydrich's killing has been published in the issue #24 of 'After the Battle'.

Thank you for the info.
I didn't say that there were four Czechs parachutists .

You did say:
In May 27 1942 Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated by four Chezchs.
Only two Czech, parachutists or not, ambushed Heydrich at the Holesovice Junction that morning: Jan Kubis and Josef Gabcik. Not four.

I understand that there were four persons ambushing Heydrich.
Several initial ideas having either failed or proved not feasible
four parachutists, Lt. Adolf Opalka (Commanding Officer), Sgt Josef Valcik, Sgt Jan Kubis and Sgt Josef Gabchik, managed on May 27th 1942 to mount an attack on Heydrich's open staff car

No, only two, Gabcik and Kubis, actually fired (gun and grenade) at Heydrich and are directly responsible for the assassination. Valcik and Opalka were only lookouts. You find all the details in the aforementioned 'After the Battle'.

The Movie and Prague

#13

Post by JLEES » 21 Dec 2002, 18:40

Last year, I visited the church where the Czech assassins were surrounded and fought it out with the SS to the end. About three years ago the Czech Government turned it into a museum dedicated to the operation and their memory. It is well worth a visit if anyone ever goes to Prague on vacation. The actual site where they conducted the attempted assassination can also be viewed by anyone seeing the city. Although there is an expressway about 300 feet from the spot, it still looks about the same. The movie Operation Daybreak, filmed in 1975, is also a great film to watch if anyone is interested in the subject. It was also filmed on location throughout Prague and even in the church where the museum now sits.
