KG Portugall

Post by Stummel » 13 Dec 2007 21:24

Hello everyone. I have just registered so I hope I am not hasty with my first post. I am not a historian so I hope someone here can assist me in finding information. My question is about Kurt Portugall and KG Portugall's activities in the Budapest kessel. I have not been able to find out much and some information seems to contradict other information. For instance, some sources say that KG Portgall defended Sas-Hegy and others say that the KG was stationed near Gellert Hill, near the Danube bank. Some sources say that KG Portugall had 88mm guns and others say that the unit fought as infantry. So I hope someone can help me to clrify my understanding. Thank you in advance.

You might want to check the following sources:

After The Battle #40: Budapest - Winston G. Ramsey - Battle of Britain Prints International Ltd. - 1983

Budapest: The Stalingrad of the Waffen-SS - Richard Landwehr - Siegrunen - 2001

The Siege of Budapest: 100 Days in World War II - Krisztián Unguáry, translated by Ladislaus Löb - Yale University Press - 2005

Hungary 1944-45: The Forgotten Tragedy - Perry Pierik - Aspekt - 1998

This is what I have on the KG 7 it's not much:

Feb 5th, 1945: The surviving 88mm guns of Kampfgruppe Portugall withdrawn to the Castle Hill/government center area.

Thank you Rob and Herr Doktor. I have the books by Mr. Landwehr and Mr. Ungvary. I will look for the other books you mention. Thank you again, all, for the information.
