This Leonardo Conti visited in my counry during the war. He had a lunch in a Finnish army headquarter with Commander-in-Chief of Finland - Mannerheim. When Leonardo Conti talked about racial things he also mocked the Polish people. A consequence was that Mannerheim became angry because he had Polish friends from his youth.

hi guys, just wondering some opinions as im doin some research into him but im wondering about the above picture of him as SS Gruppenfuhrer. looking at the collar patches they look like they have been touched up, looks unnatural to me. i have read about certain official photographs being touched up to correspond with promotions in rank, however the SS man in question could not have another photo due to being on the frontline for example. pics of otto kumm are an example

so does this appear to be touched up to u guys ?

Hello Stuckes

I think it is touched up to add the additional rank of Gruppenfuhrer since he is wearing Brigadefuhrer insignia before this was done. The pips on the shoulder boards are not visible and the pips on the collar tabs dont look right.

Its a nice close up of the medal bar though showing the 15 and 10 year NSDAP Service Awards and the ribbon for the Breast Star to the German Red Cross on the second row.

Best,

Apparently the photograph was taken in c. 1939. Conti joined the NSDAP in 1927. The dating of the photograph therefore seems incorrect, since he is wearing the 15 year NSDAP service award. Am I missing something here?

hi shadowman

if you read what i have previously wrote, it appears this photo has been touched up. it was not uncommon for official photographs to be touched up to show newly recieved awards, rank promotions and it wouldnt surprise me if the ribbon bar wasnt touched up in this particular photo either.

regards

The original photo is dated pre-1942 and Conti is wearing the old style SS-Gruf. collar insignia. The photo above has been retouched to show him in 1942 later collar insignia. The ribbon bar has not been touched. I have a copy of the original portrait.

With this information in mind - is it possible to date the photograph more precisely? Did Conti pose for this photograph in 1939 or maybe somewhat later?

I am no uniform expert, but aren't the collar tabs the "1942 and later" collar tabs? If so, the picture could only be 1942 or later because retouching both collar tabs into the modern style would be too hard to do... Correct me if I'm wrong...

Hello to all
Is this Dr.Conti on the photo below?
I ask because of collar tabs he wears here, it is pre-42 SS-Ogruf. insignia, although he was promoted to that rank in 1944, isn't he?.
