#1

Post by Giorgio » 03 Aug 2008, 23:14

Hello!
Can anyone help clarify the career (promotions) and the assignments of SS-Standartenführer Jacob or Jakob (?) Fick between October 10, 1939 and May 1, 1942 (when he was charged with command of I.Bataillon/SS-Schnelle-Schützen-Regiment “Langemarck”/SS-Division “Das Reich”) ?
Thank you very much in advance and best wishes.

"Kdt. SS-Freiw.Legion "Norwegen": 15.09.1941 - 01.05.1942"??

If "Kdt" means "Kommandant", it is not correct. Fick was, as Hstuf, leader of the education staff. On the 21.10.42 he had Fpnr 44243, which was the Fpnr of the regimental staff, Staff company and war correspondent platoon in Tr.Üb.Pl Bergen in Fallingbostel, Germany. The German staff in the Legion otherwise had Fpnr 45084 at least until Feb 42.

So this is the "mysterious" beräter Hstuf. Fick of the Freiwilligen-Legion Norwegen!
I have SS-Hstuf. Fick as Chef des Ausbildungsstabes der Freiwilligen-Legion "Norwegen" (Viken Bataillon) as of 18 September 1941. He is also mentioned as chief of this staff in late 1941, when he (and some other germans advisers in that staff) attempted to gain control of the Legion. This attempt was discovered and stopped.
On 12 February 1942 I have SS-Hstuf. Helmut Rahn (*2.8.1913) as chief of the education staff (according to Führerstellenbesetzungsliste des deutschen Ausbildungsstabes 12. February 1942). Was this change caused by Fick's "dirty" attempt in late 1941?

Kdr. I.(Krdschtz.)/SS-Schtz.Rgt."Langemark": 01.05.1942 - 20.08.1943.
The SS-Schnelle-Schützen-Regiment “Langemarck” was raised on 20 April 1942 in SS-Reich Division (mot.) equipped with Schwimmwagen and even SdKfz 250. The remnant of SS-Infanterie-Regiment 4 “Langemarck” became the regimental headquarters and Second Battalion for the new Regiment whilst the SS-Kradschützen-Bataillon Reich-became the First Battalion.
The SS-Obersturmbannführer Hinrich Schuldt became the regimental commander. His adjutant was SS-Hauptsturmführer Dieter Kesten. The commander of the first battalion was SS-Sturmbannführer Jacob Fick and his adjutant was SS-Obersturmführer Hermann Buch.
The commander of the second battalion was SS-Hauptsturmführer Walter Harzer and later he was replaced by SS-Hauptsturmführer Christian Tychsen. The battalion adjutant was SS-Obersturmführer Hans Pavelka.
Most of the Flemish volunteers in SS-Reich Division (mot.) were concentrated in this regiment.
A few months later, in October 1942, SS-Panzer Abteilung 2 was expanded into SS-Panzer Regiment 2, and the II.Bataillon “Langemarck” provided the personnel for the new II.Abteilung/SS-Panzer Regiment 2.
I.Bataillon “Langemarck” remained, now simply as SS-Kradschützen Abteilung 2. It was then disbanded on 16 March 1943, with its men reinforcing SS-Aufklärungs Abteilung 2.
So, I have:
I.Bataillon “Langemarck” [Former SS-Kradschützen-Bataillon “Reich” ]
SS-Sturmbannführer Jacob Fick: 01 May-October 1942.
SS-Kradschützen Abteilung 2 (disbanded on 16 March 1943).
SS-Sturmbannführer Jacob Fick: October 1942-27 April 1943, not 20 August 1943.

Thank you, all, for correcting my info. The attachment from Fick's Personalakten (in John P. Moore's "Führerliste der Waffen-SS" Part 1) is where I got my original info. You'll notice "Kommandierung SS-Freiw.Legion Norwegen" is entered in another place with "Kdt." replacing Kommandierung. I'm also sure I used Scherzer's description of "Kdr. I.(Krdschtz.)/SS-Schtz.Rgt."Langemark" (for his RK) in place of what is simply "Kradsch.Btl.-SS Div.Reich" in his personal records.

Hello!
Yes, Panzerschreck, this is the mysterious Fick.
As I now see from his files, it does look like he was commanding the Legion from 15.9.41-1.11.41. This is new to me.
Rahn is known to have been the acting commander for a period, but I am not sure on what dates.
Strangely enough, the scan of his file indicates that he served with the Legion until May 42, while other information there indicates that he did not...

Interesting!

No, dear Björn

He was "kommandiert" to FrwLegion Norwegen, will say hes ordered to serve there which fits to your info of him being Chef of the Ausbildungsstab. So he was "commanded to", not commander :D

Actually "kommandiert" on assignment orders means that someone is DETAILED to a unit and a detail is always intended to be temporary assignmement.

Chef,2./SS-Flak-Abt.2: 10.06.1939 - 03.03.1941
According to Mark C. Yerger 's book "Waffen-SS Commanders " volume 2, page 136, Werner Ostendorff promoted to SS-Stubaf on June 1939, simultaneously transferred to formed and lead the SS/VT anti-aircraft unit - the SS-Flugabwehr-Maschinegewehr-Abteilung - officially until October 10, 1939 ,then leaving command of that unit to Jakob Fick.
Did ever Fick take command of the SS-Flugabwehr-Maschinegewehr-Abteilung until June 10, 1941 ? Or was that unit dissolved and did Fick become Chef of the newly formed 2./SS-Flak-abteilung 2 ?

Thanks largely to John Moore's "Fuhrerliste", we know that Fick joined the Politische Bereitschaft "Ellwangen" when commissioned as an Ustuf. However, Fick was an early member of the SS - 1930/31 when he joined. Can anyone provide details of his SS career between then and 1934, please? Thanks.

Hello,

He was also an ordinary Waffen-SS war criminal:

"Der Kommandeur des Fallschirmjägerregiments 6, Oberstleutnant Friedrich-August von der Heydte, erzählte mehrmals, wie ein Regimentskommandeur der „Götz von Berlichingen", Obersturmbannführer Jakob Fick, einen amerikanischen Hauptmann aufhängen ließ...".

That's the allegation, at least, based on hearsay evidence from an individual who was not physically present when this atrocity supposedly took place. It may or may not be true. Suffice to say, Jacob Fick died in April 2004 so we may never know the truth. Von der Heydte is also dead. Sounds a bit like the legend that grew up around the alleged massacre of German prisoners in Normandy by the famous "Band of Brothers" member Lieutenant Ronald Spiers. He never fessed up to having committed this criminal act, which leaves us asking whether it really took place as well.
