Need more info on SS-Ostubaf. Emil Alafberg

Hi,


I am looking for some missing information on Emil Alafberg. When did he join the SS? What did he do from 1930-1933 and 1939-1941 in the SS? Why did a man skip two ranks and the get a promotion to SS-Ostubaf. and no more advancement after that ? Did he fall out of favor with Himmler or was he not liked by the higher leadership? It looked like early in his career he might be going up higher in rank but he seems to have topped out at just Lt Col.. And does anyone know his post war fate?

Just a few notes on his promotions.

He did not skip the rank of SS-Obersturmführer, as that rank was not instituted until 19. May 1933, nor did he skip the rank of SS-Hauptsturmführer as it was not created (initially as SS-Sturmhauptführer) on 1. December 1931. In short, those ranks did not exist when he was advanced from SS-Sturmführer (the early designation for Untersturmführer) to SS-Sturmbannführer.

Here are some notes on the development of the ranks in question (Source: "Comparative Table of Ranks" in Miller, Leaders of the SS & German Police, Volume I):

* SS-Obersturmbannführer( Rank instituted 19. May 1933)
* SS-Sturmbannführer (The post of Sturmbannführer came into existence in March 1931, but the rank apparently existed earlier as the SS-Dienstaltersliste of 01. December 1937 indicates Wilhelm Starck was promoted SS-Sturmbannführer on 22. August 1929)
SS-Hauptsturmführer (Rank instituted 01. December 1931 as SS-Sturmhauptführer. Redesignated SS-Hauptsturmführer on 15. October 1934)
* SS-Obersturmführer (Rank created 19. May 1933)
* SS-Untersturmführer (Introduced as a rank in August 1929 and known as SS-Sturmführer until 15. October 1934)

Thanks again Mike Miller. Leaders of the SS & German Police, Volume I, I have this book I got it off of Amazon but have not had a chance to read it yet. Would it be safe to assume that he was attached to the III/68 for the years of 1930 to 1933 and was Führer II/68 for 1939-1941? It looks like he did not do much of anything in the SS per-war and not much during the war. By looking at his awards, he did not even earn a KVK.

Emil Alafberg was born on 13/09/1901 in Amberg (Oberpfalz).
From 1919 to 1921 he served in the Freikorps "Landesfahne Oberpfalz" and Freikorps Oberland.
From 1.02.21 to 1.05.21, Zeitfreiwillige (part-time volunteer) in the Ausbildungsbataillon Amberg of the Reichswehr.
He entered the NSDAP on 22.11.22, attending the Reichsparteitag 1923.
In February 1925 he rejoined the NSDAP, becoming a member of the SA from July 1925 to May 1928.
On 16.05.28 he left the SA and joined the SS, soon becoming the Führer of the local Schutzstaffel in Amberg.
On 13.07.29 he was appointed Führer of the Trupp Amberg (that is, Truppführer) within SS-Sturm 41.
On 1.01.30, appointed Führer of the SS-Sturm 41 (that is, Sturmführer).
On 3.06.30, appointed Verwalter (temporary chief) of SS-Standarte XII Oberpfalz.
In early 1931 the SS-Standarte XII became the III.Sturmbann (Sitz Amberg) of the new 31.SS-Standarte "Bayern-Ost" (encompassing Niederbayern-Oberpfalz), and Alafberg continued leading the unit, being confirmed as permanent leader of the Sturmbann (Sturmbannführer) effective 1.09.31.
In November 1933 the new 68.SS-Standarte (Sitz Amberg) was established upgrading and expanding the old III./31.SS-Standarte, Alafberg becoming the chief of the III.Sturmbann in the new Standarte.
From 20.05.35 to 1.03.39, Führer of the II./68.SS-Standarte.
From 1.03.39 to 1.12.44, Führer of the III./41.SS-Standarte "Oberfranken".
From 1.12.44 to the end?, Führer of the 68.SS-Standarte.

In January 1940 he joined the SHD-Abteilung (mot.) 34 (Sicherheits- und Hilfsdienst-Abteilung 34), serving for a year and a half in the French Bretagne.
On 1.04.42 Alafberg became a member of the Luftwaffe, after the SHD units were incorporated into the Air Force.
Promoted to Unteroffizier on 1.09.42, from 1.03.43 to 15.04.43 he succesfully attended an officer candidate course (Kriegssondergruppe Luftschutz), being then promoted to Feldwebel.
By mid-1943 he was assigned to Luftschutz-Regiment 4 in France, being promoted to Leutnant der Reserve (LS) on 1.11.43.
In 1944, awarded the KVK I.Klasse.

Post war fate:
war prision in Regensburg; time in total 3y 2m; went home 28.6.48; then auxillary worker at factory D. von Sperl and sawmill in Amberg
Captured: 4.5.45; Job in War prision: Painter, fireman, actor.
Last year: Seen a framed picture of him in the local animal shelter. He must have done pretty much for this place. Probably been their chairman.
