Re: An unknown SS-officer
ttvon -- Please note the forum rules on sourcing photographs:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?p=5#5Listing the source of the images
The administration appreciate that many of the discussions require illustrations, including period photographs. At the same time, we would like to maintain the high quality that the Axis History Forum is known for. Therefore, we require that our members list the source of the photographs they post. The required information depends on the source of the photograph.
Violating these guidelines can result in removal of posts, warnings, loss of photo posting privileges and banning.
- Books and magazines: The author and title of the book. Page number is also preferred, but not required.
- Archives: The archive name and reference, as per the instructions of the archive.
- Websites: The URL to the specific page where the photograph was found. Note, that Google image search or eBay auction is not accepted. If you have found the photograph using Google image search, you must follow the link on Google, and post the website address. Likewise, for eBay auctions, you must post the seller's id. If you do not remember the source, you must explicitly write this (this is not a carte blanche to state that the source for all the photographs you post are unknown, and abuse of this method is not accepted).
- Own collection: If you own the photograph yourself (i.e. a period print or a print which you are allowed to re-publish), you must write so either by watermarking the photograph or writing it in your post. Claiming you own photographs which you do not actually own will not be tolerated.

They have the same epaulet with sign of "SS 12 Div". Even they have the same orders,EK 1 and Bulgarian Military Order for Bravery in War(below EK 1).

Re: An unknown SS-officer
I would be fascinated to know what you think identifies these men as being from the 'Hitlerjugend' Division on a shoulder strap ?ttvon wrote:They have the same epaulet with sign of "SS 12 Div"

Hi,
Sorry, I am wrong. But we can see something on his shoulder strap clear. As far as I know, the pic is taken in 1942.

Re: An unknown SS-officer
What you see is the strap cypher for the 'Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler' (LAH)... the 1st SS Division NOT the 12th SS Panzer Division 'Hitlerjugend' (HJ). You will also see the 'Adolf Hitler' cufftitle on the SS-Sturmbannführer in von Thoma's post.
The cadre of officers and NCOs for the 'HJ' regiments transferred from the 'LAH' in 1943, amongst them celebrities such as Fritz Witt (Division commander), Kurt Meyer (SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 25), Max Wünsche (SS Panzer Regiment 12), Gerd Bremer (SS Panzer Aufklärungs Abteilung 12), Willhelm Möhnke (SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 26) and Hubert Meyer (Divisional Chief of Staff).
As the 'HJ' had no specific insignia of it's own this cadre carried with them their former insignia. Later the 'HJ' was allocated it's own cufftitle but these were not issued widely and instead were held back and given as an award complete with document. I'm sure there were examples of unofficial '12' cyphers being added to Divisional unit shoulder straps.
Hope this helps, Ian.
