Gestapo Chief Dr Wilhelm Scharpwinkel was masquerading as a Lt Hagamann in the No 6 Hospital at Breslau when Frau Gerda Zembrodt, corroborated by Klaus Lonsky, saw Russian officers remove him at gunpoint. During the enquiry into the murders, the Russians refused to co-operate with the Allied investigation, although after much prodding they allowed Scharpwinkel to make a statement, in Moscow, during August and September 1946. Soon afterwards, Scharpwinkel disappeared and although reported dead by the Russians on 17-Oct-47, was believed to have found a high position in the Soviet administration

Hi,

Scharpwinkel was held responsible of the shooting of 10 US/brits officers who were escaping from Breslau. I guess the British interrogators questioned him about that in Moscow in 1946.

Anyone know where we can find these interrogations, please ?

Scharpwinkel died soon after in 1947.

You can find the two "voluntary statements" given by Scharpwinkel in Moscow, 31 Aug and 19 Sept 1946, in UK National Archives, Kew, AIR 40/2269.

According to the above (and to my own records), Scharpwinkel relinquished his post as Leiter der Stapo-Leitstelle "Breslau" on July 19, 1943, but returned again on May 27, 1944. That is a gap of almost a year, so what was he doing in the interim? Furthermore, the escape from Stalag Luft III was in March 1944, so was this why he was brought back to Breslau to conduct investigations in May 1944, or was he already involved? Hopefully someone can shed some light on this, please?

Scharpwinkel did not relinquish his post and was present in Breslau throughout that period.
British war crimes investigators questioned numerous StapoLS Breslau personnel who all mentioned him in 1943 and March 1944 when he instigated the killing (at the behest of RSHA) of numerous escaped RAF officers from Stalag Luft III (Sagan) in the Breslau area.
