I have never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. Fritz Plogsties
but I have a few pictures of him in Uniform which I want to share with you in the hope that one of you could provide me with details of his ranks, the type of medals etc. His name is Fritz Plogsties and he was last heard of defending Königsberg or an area near that City.
I have virtually no knowledge of WW2 history in that formerly german area and would appreciate if you could also have a guess at what devison he might have been in ,or anything else that you think might help me learn about the time he died in.
Thank you
Thomas
I just read the forum rules re pic's and confirm that none of these pic are available anywhere else but come from my records and depict my grandfather.

Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
Yes, my mistake, Plogsties was born in 1904.
I was confused about the ribbon bar in the feldgrau uniform.
Maybe someone can found his awards. The good news he was not in KZ service.
Best regards,

I would say the ribbons on his ribbon bar are (from left to right):
- Iron Cross 2nd Class
- War Merit Cross 2nd Class
- Winter Campaign Medal
- ?? (Could be the NSDAP 10 years service medal)
- possibly the Memelland Medal
- Sudetenland Medal
Allow me to add that the first photograph shows him while he was an officer candidate; we can tell from the twin Tresse loops on his shoulder boards.
The two photographs in the black uniform nicely show, respectively, the sleeve diamond for ASS motor units and the collar patch for the 7th Motoreinheit.

Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
Fred, when you say Fhr. I/7. SS-Motor-Standarte do you mean he served with I./7. SS-Motor-Standarte or that he commanded that unit??
And what does m.b. Fhr. mean???
And how is it possible that he got his promotion to SS-Stubaf on 11-9-38 and his promotion to SS-Hstuf on 30-1-39???
And I did find the following on the VDK-website:
Nachname: Plogsties
Vorname: Fritz
Dienstgrad:
Geburtsdatum: 09.04.1904
Geburtsort:
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 01.01.1945
Todes-/Vermisstenort: Ostpreussen
Nach den uns vorliegenden Informationen ist die o. g. Person seit 01.01.1945 vermißt.
So he most likely took part in the fightings in East-Prussia and was MIA at some point.

Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
Sorry Mike...my mistake. It should read SS-Hstuf.: 30.01.1936.Mikedc wrote:...how is it possible that he got his promotion to SS-Stubaf on 11-9-38 and his promotion to SS-Hstuf on 30-1-39???
I mean he commanded I./7.SS-Motor-Standarte. I don’t know what the b.m. before Führer means…it’s the way it’s written in the SS-Verordnungsblatt dated 29.01.1936.(see below).Mikedc wrote:Fred, when you say Fhr. I/7. Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
Question....is the badge shown on the feldgrun tunic a DRL Sports or a Wound Badge? Looks like a DRL to me....
and I agree the Ribbon Bar is an EK39, KVK 39, OST Medal, NSDAP 10 Yr. w/device, Memellands, & Sudetenland. I don't see any swords or add-ons except the NSDAP device.....
You can just makeout that his A-SS unit collar tab has the "M / number" and it's quite unusual to have a nice shot of the SS-Motorstrum sleeve diamond as in the picture....
Look for other photos, documents, letters & envelopes, any "memoribilia" that may have been related to your Grand father....and check with any other relatives to see what they might have....if they "saved" these portraits, there may be more!
I know prewar, each SS OberAbschnitts (Regional Districts) has a SS-Motoreinheiten. According to Angolia the sleeve diamond was introduced 25.1.37 for all members of SS Motorized units and Leaders on SS-Abschnitts Staffs (M).
(Cloth Ins. of the SS). SS Motorstrum was largely involved with transportation concerns (obviously)...including Trucks, buses, motorcycles, and cars....also Drivers, delivery, and "mass movement"....worked closely (?) with the NSKK/DDAC.

Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
I agree that it's not a Wound Badge. None of the pre-war DAL’s show a wound badge but the 01.12.1938 SS-DAL does show a Reichssportabzeichen in Silber.John G. wrote:...is the badge shown on the feldgrun tunic a DRL Sports or a Wound Badge? Looks like a DRL to me....

I don't know where Angolia got the date 25.1.37 from. Photographs show the motorised diamond being worn as early as 1933.

Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
"b.m. F." means "beauftragt mit der Führung" (= charged with command of)
"b.m. F. II./7.SS-Motor-Standarte: 01.1936" means that he was temporarily charged with command of the 2nd Sturmbann of the 7th Motor-Standarte in January 1936, but not officially appointed as its commander.

Re: I never met my grandfather SS-Stubaf. F. Plogstin
I can not believe that I have received more Information here ,from you, than I have in my 45 years about the life of my Opa.
I sure do have a lot of catching up to do and have reserved a few books at my local libary.
That will have to wait until after Christmas though.
Mikedc,a special thank you goes to you,my festive seasons will take on another meaning from now on.I hope I can get a few quite moments to myself on New Years day.
I am frantically searching for a picture of Fritz in a military hospital, with bandages and not looking too happy,so,all of you who have seen a wound badge,I think you might be right.I also have a picture of my Opa's brother with his car, which he apparently lent to AH on one of his visits to the East and think it would be awesome if anyone has a picture of AH in a car with the same number plates.BTW ,that story was verified by Fritz's brothers daughter-in-law,who I recently had the pleasure of meeting.
I truly am extremly gratefull to all of you who have contributed thus far and am looking forward to hear more from you.
I sign off with a few more pictures,of lesser quality than the first few,but hopefully usefull.
Bye for now
Thomas
