James,
In a list of buildings at Dachau I also just found a "h.w.l. Munchen-Dachau". This would suggest the welfare organisation was either carried on under a different name or a separate branch was also located at Dachau. A photo from about 1937 shows an SS man on parade duty in Munich with an "h.w.l." cufftitle but unfortunately the latter part of the title is invisible.

hello all, I have an Excel database which has personnel data for NARA II on many of the SS-TV officer "class" who went on the serve in the wratime Waffen SS..any queries for data are welcome. John Moore is quite right about the mix of miscreants, military professionals, and political "soldiers"...the personnel records reveal much that is interesting and when subjected to data analysis, some fascinating trends, such as the intergral staffing connections between the SS-VT, SS-JS and the SS-TV.

Hi Derek,

Thank you for the additional information. At least I have a better idea as to the nature of the officers listed in the 10.1.34 DAL under "Hilfswerk Dachau".

Best,

James

Hello TH Albright,

Thanks for your input regarding the Totenkopf Officer Database. Could you please perhaps provide a starter list of Officers to go off for this thread? Any information and / or contributions would be much appreciated.

Best,

James

apologize for the Caps..this was "cut" directly from the database...these are SS-TV officer who served in the pre-war SS-VT and were transferred to the SS-TV; the little "e" is for enlisted and the "o" for officer..also graduates of SS-JS are included..many notable wartime figures..19 of these men served in camp staff/administration positions, the rest served exclusively in the guard units..Max Pausch was Schutzhaftlagerfuhrer at Gusen II 1944-45..Kurt Launer, a famous W-SS officer, was commandant of the "moor" camp Schless-Osterstein in 1933...Wilil Duschenshoen was also a "moor" camp kommandant during this period at Papen and Fuhlsbuettel. Kunstler, Goecke and Foerschner were "famous" kommandants during the war.

Dear Mr. Albright,

Among the men on the list you recently posted was Stbf. Walter Reder. I knew him well, visited him, along with my wife, in prison in Gaeta, Italy, in 1974. I knew, of course, that he had been with Totenkopf and later with the RFSS Division in Italy. I don't recall whether he ever mentioned having been in a particular Totenkopf-Verband, and I did not have the impression that he was ever stationed in a KL. Is my information correct, as far as you know?

Best,

Winder McConnell

Hi Mr. McConnell..Reder served with SS-Totenkopfstandarten Oberbayern at KL Dachau 1936-39 after graduating from SS-Juncherschule Braunschweig. He served in the guard troops during that period according to his personnel records. He was part of the original cadre of the SS-Totenkopfdivision when it stood up in October 1939.

Dear Mr. Albright,

Thanks for your quick response. During the almost two decades that we knew each other, Walter and I never spoke of that period of his service. When we visited him in Gaeta in 1974, most of our discussion revolved around his imprisonment and the chances that he might be released, his time in Russia (when he lost an arm), and then in Italy with the 16th SS. I had known, of course, that he had early on been at the SS-Junkerschule Braunschweig and that he was with the 3rd SS Panzer Division from its inception. My recollection is that ca. 6,500 men who were called up to serve in the 3rd were drawn from the ranks of the KL guards, many, if not most of whom, were killed during the fighting at Demjansk. If you have any other details that might be of interest to me, I would be most grateful to receive them. Thank you once again for responding to me.

W. McConnell

great stuff..James..do you have the position held in the camp hierarchy of these officers? I have Gebhardt as Wachtruppe Ostfriesland company commander at KL Esterwegen 1935-36, Benz as a member of the Kdt. staff, Weichelsdorfer as IVa (camp admin officer). I have more info on a number of those listed above

here is a list of SS-TV officers who served in the early years (phase 1) of the KL system (1933-36); they also served in the wartime Waffen SS. Some of these men served as enlisted men as well in the KL system at this time, and were promoted later. 95 men in all; 13 went on to win the Ritterkruez, 40 achieved Battalion Kdr. or above in the wartime Waffen SS; 16 served as camp Kommandants; and 12 each as SS-TV battalion commanders or camp administrative officers in the pre-war years. This was a core leadership group of the pre-war camp system and represented the "skill sets" in the military, administrative, and political sphere Theodor Eicke aspired to when he expanded the SS-TV into a paramilitary force.

Hello TH Albright,

Thank you for the compliment and I really enjoyed your latest posting of the core group of SS-TV Officers. I am in the process of filling in the blanks these men had in the K.L. system in regards to their duties. I have all the basic SS information as well as what appears on the DAL's for these individuals but not the posts they held. When I find their records I will post what I can on this thread to give the officer a little more history.

Best Regards,

James
