A frienly advice for you:
For the correct spelling of " ...führer" and other german idioms you should use
Adding special characters
just click on the omega-icon (Ω) above the edit area and you will get an selection screen where you can easily select the character to include. This function is for example useful for the German characters ü and β.[/b]

Hello Phil,

Would it be possible to please add SS-T.V. Standarten Thüringen and Ostmark to this thread? I really enjoyed your bit on Oberbayern and Brandenburg.

Best,

James

All..here is a nice thumbnail summary of the history of Totenkopf units..really useful for the "numbered" Standarten which became the SS-Infanterie regiments.

Hello TH Albright,

Thanks for the website link pertaining to the T.V. Standarten, very interesting. I hope to create something along those lines in this thread but even better for AHF.

Best,

James

3 SS Totenkopfstandarte "Thuringen"

They were based in Weimar-Buchenwald . The two Wachtruppe became SS Totenkopfverbande III "Sachsen" under Max Simon 29.3.36 - 31.12.1936 and then Paul Nostitz 31.12.36 - 1.7.1936 and SS Totenkopfverbande II "Elbe" under Erwin Reitz These two units were combined and they were raised to Standarte level on the 1st July 1937.SS Sturmbann VII (under Michael Lippert 10.7.1937 - 1.8.1937 Heimo Hierthes 1.8.1937 - 1.5.1938) and VIII (under Emil Sator 10.7.1937 - 1.11.1937 Kurt Weisse 1.11.37 - 1.5.38) were re-numbered I and II on the 1st May 1938 ( I under Heimo Hierthes 1.5.38 - 15.11.38 and Walter Bellwidt 15.11.38 - 4.1940 II under Kurt Weisse 1.5.38 - 1.3.1939 and Eberhard Quirsfeld 1.3.1939 to ??) . It may be of interest that Ulrich Besch

was the only member of the SS-Totenkopfverbände. who joined the Bundeswehr in case of disregarding the condition of employment !!

Hello Dieter,

Thanks for the info on Besch. Did he get to stay in Bundeswehr despite his membership in the SS-T.V.? It's strange that Conrad Schellong was extradited from the USA not because of his membership in the W-SS but because he was a pre-war member of the SS-T.V. according to Richard Landwehr.

James

Dear James,

Besch simply kept the Sonderprüfgruppe der Annahmeorganisation im Personalgutachterausschuss (special board of examiners in the personnel advisory committee) in the dark about his career in the Totenkopverbände before his engagement. This was an abuse contrary the regulations and justified the instant dismissal.

Cheers
