"Papa" [Eicke & Hausser]

Where did the "Papa" in Theodor 'Papa' Eicke and Paul 'Papa' Hausser come from? Was that a nick-name?

Yep, it was because of their age, (compared to SS recruits of a much younger age), and also as a mark of respect as they were looked up to fondly, although in the case of Eicke there was a very dark side.

Yes, I agree with CHRISCHA but it was also the fact that they cared about their men as a kind of father like figure. As the nickname means "Daddy" in English.

How old were Eicke & Hausser?

Hausser had already retired from the Reichswehr in 1932 at the age of 52!!! when at Himmler's request he was asked to set up an SS military academy. By the end of the war he held commands with Army Group C in Southern Germany & Seventh Army in Normandy.

Eicke was born in 1892; Hausser in 1880.
