Post by Brian Von Stauffenberg » 27 Apr 2002, 12:56

Does anyone know, can i get a copy of an SS soldiers service record via the Dienstelle or other source, the individual did not die during the war but died in the 60s.
Any info appreciated.

Hi,

It depens a little what rank the soldier had. Was he an officer there is most certain a file on him, for non-officers it's more difficult. There might be papers on him but not any SS personal file as for the officers. There are several archives to search, Bundesarchiv and NARA would be my tip for trying to find information.

Best
Martin

Officer records at BDC and NARS are good, the non-officer ranks are not as complete and many lack a file.

Help

Post by Brian Von Stauffenberg » 27 Apr 2002, 20:36

Well He was a Sturmann in The "Reich" Division in 1941 and i believe by 1943 he was an UnterScharfuhrer, not sure if he made it to officer by the end of the war, this is what i am trying to obtain is his service record, he is not a Blood relative but was My Grandmothers first Husband and my Uncles father, i would like to know more of his service how can i find this out, all i have is The Family History, His Birthplace and date and marriage date to My grandmother and a WaSt Snippet that shows when he was drafted and to Regiment 4 of The "Reich" Division, i dont know the organisations you have mentioned can you be more specific please.
Thanks Guys
Brian.

Thanks Guys, problem is that guy only has information on officers and wants $15 just to perform a search of the officer lists, what i really wanted to know is, Is there an Office which keeps the SS files such as the Dienstelle that i can contact personally, with him not being a direct blood ancestor but an in law will i be allowed to view his file considering he has been dead nearly 40 years?

NARS has no time restriction or required relative status. Its all the material in BDC and was microfilmed in the 1970s. Bule only uses an incomplete set of DAL for data, your man's personnel file (if an officer) would have more data. NARS also has the RuSHA files if he put in a marriage application that would include a Dienstlaufbahn (handwritten capsule biography) and these cover all ranks. In general the EM and NCO files are slim unless awarded a high decoration but there are exceptions.

You can contact and order film via Internet though I go in person. Use United States National Archives or National Archives and Research Service as your search term.
