Hello Ivan,

there is several issues of the Filipič Book. I have one old version from 1963, so I do not know, if in the new versions are also mentioned new foundings od documents from dr. Tone Ferenc about aktion Gendarmerie Kompanie (Gend. Hauptmannschaft Marburg).

T. Ferenc: Nov okupatorjev dokument o napadu na Pohorski bataljon 8.I.1943, Časopis za zgodovino in narodopisje, I. zvezek, 1972

Thank you, Darko, for another excellent reply and addition! A great work, and I very much appreciate it.

(it's only too bad that the first map wasn't more clear, but it's obviously a copy of the copy's copy, which is understandable).

I wouldn't be surprised if dr. Tone Ferenc foundings were indeed eventually included. If I wrote it down correctly, the longest issue of Filipič's book (known to me) was published in 1975. I'll try to get that issue (it shouldn't be a problem, there is a copy in the city archive here).

Cheers & good night for now! (my eyes are closing)

Hello Ivan,

yes, France Filipič put dr.Ferenc document in the 4th edition of the Book (1975).

Image

Image

Dr. Ferenc put also some remarks about fallen Polismen and Soldiers:

"at the Begin of Battle was death 3 from Gend. Komp. Gend. Hauptmannschaft Marburg/Maribor under command of Hauptmann Erich Jungbauer, 7 death from Res. Pol.Komp.(mot.) Alpenland.
6 death was on Section I, on Section II (Heer) was 1 death soldier, on Section IV (Wehrmannschaft) was 2 death."

I do some research to control this Data:

1. For Gend.Komp. Hauptmannschaft Marburg/Maribor we do not need to do research, because it is clear from document:

Death on 8.1.1943:
- BOW d. Gd. Leopold Holobek, Gd. Posten Stockenhammer/Štore, Cilli/Celje

- Wm. d. Gd. d. R. Alois Lasshofer, Gd. Posten Tüffer/Laško (Also Lasshofer is on Volksbund list - my mistake)

- Hipo Alois Ramschek, Gd. Posten Mörtendorf/Markovci, Pettau/Ptuj

2. Wehrmannschaft:
. Kurt Tschernschetz was Slovenian from Marburg/Maribor: Kurt Černčec
- Rudolf Rowschek was Slovenian from Marburg/Maribor: Rudolf Rovšek

Image

3.Johann Wodeb was Slowene from Cilli/Celje: Ivan Vodeb

Image

4. Ernst Bresnig (Hipo) was Slowene from Cili/Celje: Ernest Breznik

5. Karl Kratzer, Wachtm. d. Schupo d. R., Wach Batl. I Wien, 4. Kom (Schönstein/Šoštanj)

6. Karl Fuchs, Oberwachtm. d. Schupo, Wach. Batl. Alpenland,4. Komp. Laufen/Ljubno, Untersteiermark/Spodnja Štajerska

7. Res. Komp. Mot. Alpenland:

- Heinz Busse, Oberwachtm. d. Gend.

- Johann Scharl, Wachtm. d. Gend.

- Michael Pürmayr, Wachtm. d. Res., died in Hospital Cilli/Celje 14.1.1963, burriend on 16.1.1943, Cemetery Cilli/Celje

For other member of Res. Komp. Mot. Alpenland I have no Data.

But Michael Pürmayr is additional on list, so if realy one soldier died from Heer, than it was casualties 20 men.

Darko

I am amazed with how many documents related to this fight survived, and I have no idea where do you keep finding them :D (well, actually I do, of course, since you sourced them neatly too :D ) But where did you find the obituaries?

Thank you yet again, Darko. Excellent material, as always.

Cheers (& good night again!)

Hello Ivan,

100% true source is "Gräberliste" from Bürgermeister from town Cilli/Celje.
I put "Gräberliste" allready on forum der Wehrmacht: Heldenfriedhof Cilli/Celje, Slowenien
link: http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/index ... /?pageNo=3

Obituaries is possible to find in newspaper, which we have on internet (Marburger Zeitung, Štajerski gospodar).

Bigger Problem is, that Archives in Slovenia is closed for WW2 because of "Person data protection".

H. Himmler sent answer to Rösener on 13th.1.1943 at 16:25:

" I am expressing recognition for succes in the battle with partisan groups on Pohorje Area."

Of course sent H. Himmler immidiatelly report to Führer (on 11.1.1943): Meldungen an den Führer über Bandendenbekämpfung:

Meldung Nr.53

Himmler only Copy-paste the Rösener report into Meldung Nr.53 and sent to Hitler!

More great info. Thanks very much for posting this. One wouldn't expect that a destruction of a small "gang unit" would draw such an attention.

I've seen an estimation (here) that the German troops included about 2000 men. Would this be correct? 2000 against 69?

Hello Ivan,

Number of men in German troops is not easy to estimate and also Filipič and Ferenc do not say in Book or articles.

We know, that in "Abschnitt III" was 350 men from Heer and we know that Hauptmannschaft Marburg/Maribor and Cilli/Celje sent together around 100 Gendarme. We know also, that one Komp. Lsch. had 70-90 men.

Maybe is estimation 2000 men to big, but about 350 men per "Abschnitt" is real, together around 1400 men.
Yes, on the other site, in winter camp on Osankarica was only 70 partisans. 69 of them falled (several of them made suicide, because they do not want to come in Gestapo hands), one was captured.

Germans decide to put so big troop there, because had bad experience before with the "Pohorski bataljon". In the past they attack them with troops about several hundred men, but "Pohorski bataljon allways withdraw and disapeared.

This time made kommander of "Pohorski bataljon several mistakes. One of them was not to send patroils around camp, second was not to escape immidialy in the begin of Battle, when the ring was not closed. But he has no information about position of German troops...

Darko

Hello, Darko and Gaius, and thanks very much for the latest additions.

A question, regarding the number of Partisans: I've read (or misunderstood, the text was in Slovenian) that the total number was 69 and that 68 were killed + one captured (Sulc). So: the total of 70 or 69?

Cheers,
